Additionally, knowing DD's shipping practices I'd feel a lot more comfortable buying such a large fish from them than any other source.

What is it about the black tang that makes them so expensive?

Samething that makes all the other fish in the hobby so expensive.

Rarity, availability or survival rate.

If its rare, its worth more.

If its not commonly available, once it is people are willing to pay a lot for it.

It it has a poor survival rate, and for example only 1 out of 20 imported make it, then the company will have to sell it for more since they lost so many.

Did you know the Gem tang is not rare AT ALL in some parts of africa?

Yes, were talking GEM TANG! In some areas you could put on a snorkel and literally be surrounded by them.

What makes them so expensive is that they are extremely hard to obtain a license/permit to collect them and import them.

There's normally a specific reason though. I understand that some things just get ran up because of hype but most of the time theres a specific reason for a paticular fish. Just curious.

Oh.

Personally I only like the black tang as a juvenile. Once it grows that line at the top of its body it get's a little unattractive, although is it just me or does this specific one seem to have like a Neon blue coloring on it?

You can tell from the relatively harsh/crisp shadow to the lower right of the fish on the sand that they used either a flash, or a very bright directional light. I'm assuming they used a flash. That brings out the bright blue in the fish to an unrealistic amount. I think they probably toned it down some but it's pretty much impossible to make it look exactly like real life when you use a flash on a fish with those colors.

However, when taking a picture of a black fish, if you dont use a flash you'll get almost no detail, so it's something that has to be done.

$900 fish, put up a 1min video of it eating. that would make for a lot more excitement and it is easier to examine the fish than looking at that pic.

Divers Den = fish eating/healthy/perfect.

They keep some of their fish for months before putting them up for sale to insure that they are healthy and well acclimated to aquarium life. That is why their (sometimes) higher price is justified.

I have a DD fish and i know about all that you mentioned.

Still doesnt change the fact that people would love to see a clear vid of a fish eating and swimming around rather than one stand still picture. Then they could get a good view of the fish at all angles.

I'm not saying they need to do this with all fish, just a select special few, ie the black tang, conspic, and wrought iron.

www.aquatouch.com does this and so does NYA on a few of his fish. his videos are terrible though.

I checked out the aquatouch site and I see what you mean. The video makes a significant difference in getting a feel for the fish.
