90 degrees? 2 weeks later pictures......

My friend has many of the same pieces in his tank as i do. His tank stays stable at around 78. Mine ranges from 77 to 83. His peaked at 88 and he lost 4 colonies. Mine peaked at 90 plus and i lost one. Not enough data to be sure but, the pieces that are subject to the constant temp did not fare as well as the pieces that are subject to the 6degree daily swing. Was every thing else constant? We would need more data to be sure but in this instance the corals that are subject to daily swings fared better that the others.

Why is it when you grow'em up big and nice something like that happens? Similar incident with me with a dying ph probe on a Ca reactor throwing alk/Ca throught the roof and I dose vodka compounding the elevation!

There are a lot of things that can go wrong with these systems. Eventually something will happen that will kill some animals. Living in Florida we deal with storms , humidity and very high temperatures all the time. Oh did i mention the floods? Every 10 years or so we have a 100 years storm and then all bets are off. Make sure all you buddies have frags of all your good stuff and go from their.

Just saw this post , sorry to hear of the temp problem , everything seems to be recovering well , tank is still amazing and 100x better in person. hopeing everything keeps geting better.

More good news on the tank. I was able to ship a batch of frags out last night and they all arrived in Nj alive and well. Some of the guys that have given me problems in the past including the Tyree soli and green efflo shipped sucessfully. So ....will try to get some new images and start a fs thread in that forum in the next couple of weeks or so.

damage and recovery temp spike plus 5 weeks

damage and recovery temp spike plus 5 weeks

Well its been about six weeks since the spike. The valida and nana's were hit hard. They all lost significant flesh around the base. They have all fully recovered. The Efflos also lost some flesh and have recovered. The PM lost some flesh on one branch. I fraged the limb and the colony recovered and healed the frag spot in about two weeks . The branches in the frag spot are over one quarter inch long. The only coral still showing stress are my Hawkins colonies. They both browned out imediately. They have been coloring back up but one of them rtned about a week ago, A couple of the tips held flesh and they are holding steady as frags. The other colony began to Rtn Tonight. I expect it to loose a lot of the browned our spots. Hopefully the tips will suvive and i will save a little of it. It seems the smooth skined corals were hit harder thn most of the others. This makes sense as one would expect them to come from deeper more temp stable parts of the reef. Here are some images that show what i am talking about.

This is an image of my big purple Stag. This guy lost a lot of base right after the event. As you can see it is almost fully recovered. There is some light spots around the base but I dont expec tthis coral to do anything but grow from here on out. If you look to the right of the stag you can see an efflo . If you look at the base you can see where the base has also lost flesh. The edges are sharp and there is no new loss. This coral is alsowell on the way to recovery and i dont expect anymore loss from this coral.

Here is an image of the back of the purple monster colony. I was really afraid I was going to loose this colony when i saw the flesh loss on one of the branches. However as you can see, the coral is fully healed and in less than a month the frag scar is healed and has quarter inch long branches.

Here is an image of the Hawkins that is curently loosing flesh. You can see the white spot where the flesh is gone. These images were taken this afternoon and the coral has lost more flesh since these were taken.

All in all, I feel very fortunate that the loses and damage were as limited as they have turned out to be. I expect to save some frags of the Hawkins and other than that I only lost one colony. The tank has recovered and the color is coming back fast. Some of the colonies seem to be growing faster than they ever have and the colors are getting more intense every day.
