90% Loss

About 3 weeks ago or so I moved my tank to it's new home.
I had limited time between working 7 days a week and trying to be a father and husband.

So on a Friday night with a friends help, we began to move my tank to my new home. Everything went pretty smoothly and it was well planned.

We started around 8pm and everything was at the new house by 12am. It took an additional 3 hours for me to make sure everything was setup and functioning.

Apparently, everything did not go as smoothly as planned. Something died that night which caused a domino effect the following 12 hours.

saru mo ki kara ochiru = even monkeys fall from a tree

I had to work at 6am the next day and when I got up, the water looked a bit cloudy, but that was kind of expected.

By the time I got home at 8pm or so, the stench from the rotting carcasses in my tank was rancid.

All of my fish, SPS, one very large giant clam and some of my zoas were dead. I tried in vain to fix the problem, it just got worse.

By the time I pulled out the remaining zoa colonies, most of them were dead or dying.

Fortunately, I have a friend that owns a pet store and he's been holding my remaining zoas. He's slowly nursing them back to health.

In total I lost about 75% of my colonies and the ones that survived have only 5 to 20% of their original mass. Yet they are trying to make a comeback.

My tank has finally stabilized and it's a good thing too.

One of our members made an extremely generous act and sent me a package of zoas and not only zoas, but some of the nicest zoas I have ever seen!

Plus, Barry from Kahuna corals shipped them. None better, imo.

Thanks mfinn.;)

Anyway, I have begun the process of rebuilding, again. Right, this isn't the first time I crashed a reef tank.

Insanity = doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Thanks for letting me rant.:)

Bill,

Sorry to hear about your loss. Luckily you have enough friends around you to keep your hopes up. Once you get things going again let me know! I'm sure I can find some polyps with your name one it. It would be a shame for the zoanthid forum to lose someone so passionate.

Best of luck to you and hopefully you wil come back with the surprise of the decade::::: The Purple Safe Cracking Armageddon People Eaters (aka...PSCAPE).

Do you know what died? Was it a large fish?? I mean, you had the tank all running n stuff right? I dont see how one thing can die and crash the tank?

and sorry for ur loss, sounds like it sucks

I call first dibbs on the PSCAPE. I'm at the top of your list!! :D :D

sorry to hear the final assesment Bill. I have heard no good stories of people moving their tanks in one day, and having fish and sps survive.

i have had to move my stuff a couple times, but never had any loses yet. i have always filled up a extra tank i had laying around at the new place with water from the existing tank, and let it sit for a week before moving stuff. pretty good success. but that was with small tanks, not many fish (maybe 1 or 2), and just a couple sps.

i'm getting ready to move in about a month, and i know its gonna be rough. i have a TON of sps now that i'm afraid to lose, or afraid they'll die and cause a domino effect.

i've had way too much success in this hobby since i began, i'm just waiting for my day to come :( i know a crash is inevitable one day though :(

v8maro, unfortunately I can say from experience that the act of moving can cause an inexplicable crash of one's tank. When I moved this past fall I lost everything in my nano so even though I'm sure Bill set his systen up perfectly this stuff seems to happen :(

Regardless of the cause, I am so sorry that you had to go through this Bill. I know that you'll bounce back though and your generosity with fellow reefers should pay off! Not to get up on a soapbox here but I think it is times like these for fellow reefers to lend a helping hand and also given that you were kind enough to share your frags with others on this forum, a payback system of sorts would be great. Even though we didn't get to do our trade I know I'll be sending you some frags this summer!

Ah crap :( I was rooting for your colonies to pull thru. Lemme know if your interested in any of mine & I'll see what I can do to help

Condolences, RJ. Let us know when you are ready, and I'm sure we can get you going again. I'm certainly willing to frag a few nice colors/morphs for you.

I've been through every bad thing that can happen with tanks over the last few months. Had red bugs, but they are easy. then came the AEFW's-lost 90% of my acros... THen my rabbitfish went on a rampage and started devouring zoa colonies at a rate of two per day (until I got them all out). Now I'm seeing some funny things on my montis... We all know what that likely is. It's only brought me in tighter to the hobby, though... Looking forward, things can't really get any worse, right?

Anyone have a pic of these "pscape" that are mentioned?

That's funny....

I guess it's a good thing that the LFS could pull through for you, even in a small way. I honestly don't know what I would do in that situation. All the best luck in rebuilding! When I have something to send you, I will.

Hey guys, thanks for all of your support.
It's tough dealing with this, kind of takes the wind out of my sail, but I know when my tank is doing great, it rocks.

It's just a lesson when moving an established tank. Have someone else babysit the animals until the system levels out.

Cheers,
Bill
