900 Gallon Reef Project

WOW! I read the entire thread. These threads are like mystery novels. You can't put them down. I was going through all the excitement and heartbreak with each post! Its a crazy crazy thing we are into. Reef Keeping has to be the most expensive , exciting, heartbreaking addiction with an unparalleled devotion and love to technology and marine life. I am waiting for the divorce...lol......but honestly I have read threads exatly like this where by the end of the thread the guy is done and selling everything....Don't give up. See about grant money to make your Reef and educational tool for school kids. Write the state or the feds.....go to the schools in your area see if there is faculty interest and make your Reef a real world classroom...funny thing huh it all boils down to biology and husbandry no matter how big or how small our captive REEFS are....this is more than a HOBBY...I HATE THAT WORD...good luck.................Just saying......

Wanted to post a quick update. I am getting rid of my Acan's LEDs and am in the process of upgrading to a Reeftech solution. Haven't had a problem with growth or operation on any of them. I just am unhappy with the coloration I am getting. Considering how much time, energy and money I have invested in the project, to have the finished product not be pleasing to the eye is frustrating. That is why I am swapping over to the Reeftech products, which give me a huge amount of flexibility and customization. The sunrise/sunset and weather simulation stuff is amazing.

I have 5 x 2ft and 2 x 4ft Acans fixtures that I am going to be selling for half of what I paid for them, they are only 5 months old and are the latest version from Acans. PM me if you are interested in them!

Ill post up some pics once the Reeftechs get setup, I think I am going to try to use 6-8 of them to cover my tank and even may consider shelving my MHs.

I know what you all are thinking, the answer is yes I am crazy.

I am interested in the Limestone background you had put in. What kind of limestone is it? Have you had any problems because of it and is it doing what you wanted?

Its a limestone tile produced in Miami, I have had no problems using it and it is doing exactly what I wanted. I can easily glue frags to it and it is almost completely covered with coraline algae.

Is it any specific type of limestone? I know alot of stone types have names. Is it something I could pick up at lowes or home depot?

My installer uses it all the time. I don't think its widely available but I'll see if I cant find the product name and the manufacturer for you. Ill send a PM once I find it.

Would you mind providing a list of your equipment?

Would you also share your quarantine procedures? Specifically how long you keep corals and fish in quarantine & what you use for dips / medication.

Fantastic tank. I'm drooling!:frog:

Are those polyps that are clinging to the tiles in your last set of pics? Looks like they (the tiles) are covered in life !! :spin1:

I have all sorts of things clinging/growing on the tile. I am working on attaching some encrusting corals directly to the tile once I get my new lights in place.

Did they attach themselves? Or are they artificially placed, if naturally occuring, I'm sure alot of folks will tag along and try their own limestone walls. Thanks for the updates.

To date, I have not attached a single thing manually. Everything you see on the limestone migrated and attached on its own. I see literally hundreds of baby turbos clinging to the tile. Ill take some macro shots of what is growing this weekend. I have received tons of PMs about where I got the tile. I'll try to find the exact manufacturer and post it up when I get my equipment listing built.

any updates on lights, or back room pictures?
hows the deltec doing? or have you changed?

All my Acans are sold, just waiting on my Reeftechs to clear customs. Looks like they will clear customs on Friday for a Monday install. I can't wait to see them on the tank, the setup that Absolutely Fish in Clifton, NJ had sold me on the whole Reeftech system. I will take some more back room pics shortly. The Deltec is kicking butt with the new model pumps attached, no issues. The sheer amount of skimmate pulled, along with how thick it gets is amazing. The self cleaning head really makes the skimmer. All my fish are doing well and my corals are looking a lot better, though I am still having a lack of polyp extension that I can't explain.

Reeftechs are in!!!!!!!!!!!! I have them installed with the help of a few family members. Just waiting on the ballasts to come in tomorrow. I got 8 of them up there and let me tell you the build quality is amazing and the things look like they are extremely over engineered. I will be posting tons of before/after pics and some videos tomorrow. I don't think I am going to be able to sleep...
