900 Gallon Reef Project

My experience with the Deltec in-sump skimmers is that they are insanely sensitive to water height. Once you put them in their own sump section with a steady water height they are great.

My issue with the Deltec skimmer has been that the build quality is not what it used to be. They went with cheaper materials and I have had issues with ports on the skimmer becoming unglued. The pump situation was bad, but the new version seem to be working without issue now.

My Radions are at 8 inches above the water. I have glass covers on the tank. I have only soft corals and LPS right now, so I'm running 20K color at about 30% average throughout the day with a maximum of 45%. See if you can try the TIR lenses for the Radions. It would better focus the light from each puck, and it might eliminate the little specs of light [disco effect] that people complain about.
I tried a RBTA a few months ago. It went downhill from the first day in Q. It lasted about a week in my DT and then turned grey and died. I strongly suspect that it was exposed to amonia in its first day due to a fish that died in with it. Will try again when my local fish guy can get me one and keep it healthy for a few. Don't want to throw away money.
Have you ever seen a Volcano skimmer in action? They're HUGE and hold about 100 gallons of water. I think they are all custom built so you could specify whatever quality of materials you want.
We all want pictures...of random stuff, at random times.

very cool!!!

i know there was a little controversy and doubts…. (i was skeptical)
but it looks nice, and you have defiantly proved me and anyone else wrong!

you still planning on attaching some corals to it?

Hi Lukas,
Its me Adam, we meet last year. Nice lights, I give it a try to GHL, will see how they will work for me, so we can compare later:). My tank is almost done, slowly filling up with water :). Take a look on my thread if you have time, maybe before completely filled you can give me your advice. Talk to you soon what did you do with your old reeftechs?

Will do. I am looking to get rid of my old Reeftechs right now. Ill send you a PM later.

I had a ton of corals attached to it before the tank crashed. I will be attaching some later this week.

My last debate is Vortech MP60 vs. Tunze Turbelle. I am thinking of adding additional flow in lieu of the closed loop. The closed loop doesnt really produce a natural flow that reaches all corners of the tank. The two Tunze wave boxes do a decent job, but I want to add more.

Tunze push further the vortechs.
I had a MP40 and sold it and got the older style 6100 tunze and it is way better.

But the vortech did push a wider flow. Just not far enough in the tank

I have an mp10 that I got a deal on. I also have the battery backup for it. That's the only reason I have it as its under powered for most tanks. The fact that it has the motor outside the glass and the controller that comes with it are the positives IMO. The fact you cannot aim them is a big negative. I've never had the tunze, but I know they can be aimed much more effectively than the vortech. They can alternately be modified to be used without the magnet so you can put them where you need them.

Why don't you give an opportunity to the hydro wizard 42 5000gph 31 watt +/- $600 or even the hydrowizard 63 specs 16000gph 75watts at €950. You could talk to Oliver Lucanus who is in charge of north America belowwater dot com. Remember that the flow of this pump is laminar very different than the flow of the vortechs. I'm going with this pump in my 10 footer.

Benny, I really like the tile and am considering it in my 300 gal build. Is there anything in particular to look for or will any old natural limestone tile do? And as far as powerheads go will the magnetic bases work? The ones I am thinking about are only good for up to 3/4 inch glass, and with the width of the tile added on to that, I don't know if they will still hold and I can't see a suction cup holding a grip for a long period of time on limestone.

flow dynamics

flow dynamics

I just read a great article in Coral magazine. It's all about proper flow in reef tanks. If you have the opportunity read up before you buy anything. I highly recommend implementing some of these techniques. Your tank is so large, that a well thought out system of power-heads is going to be tough to do, but can be really good if you visualize it, and plan it out beforehand. More will always be better, but if you don't work out the proper flow dynamics, you could just make a mess faster. Like a great new golf club (now I can hit it even further into the woods!!!) I'm looking forward to an exceptional result from you. Let's see what you can do! :bounce3::bounce2::bounce2::bounce3::bounce2::rollface::rollface::jester:

Lucas,
I have 2 Tunze 6105's (alternating pulse setting) and 2 Jebao wp40's (on wave setting) in my 215 gal 6 foot tank.....of course your tank is much bigger than mine...but I love the Tunze's and for the price the Jebaos have been very good as well.

Can you advise which article.....date and author?

This months Coral magazine. Mar/Apr. Has a picture of some NPS orange corals, and some purple anthias. It's more of an interview, of Jake Adams. Done by Matt Pederson. Their are two similar articles in the mag, but the first one seems to make more sense. As in, the second one doesn't really...I guess I got a free subscription through buying fish or fish supplies, whatever, I'll take it.:reading:
I reset my pumps yesterday because of this. Did a little on/off programing of these cheap pumps through my Apex. Voila!!
The whole tank moves now. Then, it moves a different way for a few hours...Really got me thinking. Now I think I need more controllable pumps....And maybe coarser sand in my next tank....:lolspin:

I would test any limestone tile for potential contaminants. The company that built my system has been using this tile in hundreds of builds with no issue. As long as its pure limestone with no fillers or sealers it should be fine. With the magnetic bases you could also get stronger magnets to do the job, its not that difficult. You just have to be very careful not to lose a finger to them!
