9002 skimmer compared to pinwheel

Hi

I replaced my Deltec pinwheel skimmer with the 9002 as I was after a quieter skimmer.

I realise the 9002 produces the air after the impeller rather than being fed into a pinwheel. Does this mean it will remove protein differently due to a diferent bubble size or should it still remove the same protein?

My previous skimmer would always remove some very dark smelly skimate whereas the 9002 is only removing fairly pale coloured skimate with little smell and less quantity. The tank water also looks less clear than before.

Is this due to a breaking in period or am I expecting too much from the 9002?

The tanks is 25 gal and mainly SPS.

Thanks

Tim

Venturi skimmers produce larger bubbles and the bubbles rise faster, so the skimmate is different in consistency, more cellulose will be removed but a bit less protein and the skimmate will be lighter in color and less concentrated. It should improve with tuning and break in but you are comparing a skimmer with more than twice the price tag, a larger body and a smaller needle wheel produced bubble.

Thanks Roger

I realise they are different products, but the Deltec was oversized for the tank which is 25 gals (and very noisy). Technically, the 9002 is oversized also going by the spec and I just wanted to make sure the tank wouldn't suffer the change over as hopefully the 9002 will still keep the water clean.

The Deltec removed probably 50ml per day of dark brown very smelly gunk whereas the 9002 has probably removed less per day and mainly clear and not smelly.

That makes me think the dark brown gunk that was being removed now remains in the tank.

The 9002 is actually rated to 20.8 gallons of SPS, the stated rating is for a FOWLR or dutch type tank, as the catalog and site indicate, 20% should be deducted for a soft coral tank, 40% for an LPS tank, 60% for an SPS tank and 70% for a fish intense SPS tank, this applies to all of our skimmer models.

I think you should get a greater volume once it is broken in and tuned, 100ml a day should be no problem, but it will have a lighter tea color and it won't remove as much as the Deltec which is a stronger skimmer.
