9004 + Ozone

FlyPenFly

SPS Killer
Hi, I was looking at the instructions and it seems to indicate to hook up the ozone generator directly into the air intake?

If I don't use an air pump on the ozone, will that be okay or is that required?

This is the unit I'm planning on, Weipro ET-50

The 9004 silencer has a nipple where it takes in air, add a T to this. Use a small air pump, the smallest you can get, to pump through the ozonizer to one barb of the T. A 9004 consumes at most 150 lph of air, with a 50 lph pump it can take the balance as needed from the open end of the T and you won't overpressurize anything. Keep in mind that ozone tends to reduce skimmer production, you are essentially chemically incinerating the waste so it is burned rather than collected. Very small amounts of ozone will clarify the water and skimming should still be normal, but this is with a does of 1mg/hr per 25 gallons.

Okay thanks, that's a great idea with the T. I'm planning to use a brass one since the ozone will probably degrade a plastic one.

The system is 30 gallons, I'm not sure if the min setting on the ET-50 delivers 1mg/hr but I plan to just run it a few hours a day to start and go up from there.

Will the Tunze 9004 skimmer body and pump/impeller itself be okay with ozone in the long term for say 2-3 years?

Plastic does become hard and brittle from exposure to ozone, but we do use ozone resistant plastics and they should still last many years with low ozone doses, 2-3 should be no issue, what I generally see is that after 3-4 the silencer gets brittle and discolored and the skimmer may shatter if dropped as the flexibility of the plastic has been lost.

rvitko, as a tunze rep can you recommend the correct strength generator in mg/hr and how to install to a tunze 9004? to airline/ carbon placement

Page 23 of the manual explains the installation. When used with a skimmer the ozone will be strictly for clarifying and not as a sterilant, a dedicated reactor is needed to use ozone as a sterilant to control parasites and bacteria. We recommend 1 mg/hr per 25 gallons so a very small ozonizer is needed, usually the smallest you can buy is 25 mg/hr. Just keep in mind that the stated dose is only achievable with an air dryer, without an air dryer, realistically the output will be half of what it is rated for.
