9010 pump problem

fraggin

DVRC
my pump has locked up.

it appears that on the side of impeller there are 2 metal "pins" that keep sliding out and jamming in the shaft hole.

this is the 2nd pump to fail on me in just over 3 years.

Sounds as if the brakes are locked in the out position.

Depending on how stuck this may or may not work.....Try rotating the impeller back and forth clockwise and counter clockwise. With luck it will loosen and the brakes with retract enough to pull the impeller out. Once out if nothing appears damaged and is clean hold the impeller and spin it back and forth and see if the brakes will come out and retract freely. If the pump is dirty and the power went out for instace the brakes may not be able to retract and could have locked the pump up.

Take a look at the thread here to see what i am referring to as brakes. The old Stream impeller is similar

i had it apart last week for cleaning,i did notice the base bearing was still down in the hole.
they seem to pop out as soon as power is turned on. could it be the base bearing screwing it all up? i will try to dig that out tonitght.

You just need a new drive unit, the brakes have worn out, or the cogs that engage them. How old is the pump? The drive unit should generally last 2-3 years, it is just like any other impeller assembly, they wear out and need to be replaced periodically, they are not that expensive.

well like i said i had the pump replaced prolly within a year of purchase of the skimmer the last time. so this pump is prolly around 2 years.

should i be able to expand the brakes when holding the base and twisting the impeller? is there an easy test to be sure its the brakes worn out?

Yes, if the brakes fall out on there own or with minimal effort it is the brakes or the cogs on the magnet that engage them. When turned one way the brakes pull in and the shaft and magnet should only turn as a single piece. When turned the opposite way the brakes come out and you should reach a stop where it will take more effort and if you keep twisting they come out completely and the shaft can then be removed.

well i dug into it a bit farther and disassembles the impeller, had a good bit of Ca built up in the bearing areas and in the brake housing. put it back together and seems to be working, just not the flow that it once had. also the base of it looked a bit chewed up.

should i just get another impeller?

thx for the help, i took the impeller apart again and soaked it overnight in vinegar and it its working good. i will look into getting another one and keep this for a backup.
