9010 Pump

Moving on Up
Hi what is the best way to clean this pump? When I turn my tank off for a water change sometimes this pump does not start back up. I take it apart and clean it the best I can but there is some of that hard calcium build up on it. I assume that is whats making the pump not start after I turn it off. So how should I clean it?

Take a look at the top thread on driver alarms and cleaning, the photos show a stream drive unit but the skimmer drive unit is virtually identical. Use plain white vinegar, 50/50 with water for most jobs, but full strength is OK for tough stuff. Use a soft brush and do not scrape it with a sharp tool.

WIll running the pump overnight in a 50/50 solution work as well?
Rather than taking it all apart.

I don't have a tunze, but with my koralias I usually take them apart and soak the parts for an hour or so, then I scrub them down gently, reassemble everything and run it in the vinegar solution for another 30 minutes to an hour.

IMO running the pump in vinegar isn't allowing the calcium buildups to soak and loosen up, but it does help get to all the little parts.

I agree with ryan, running them in vinegar is good between major cleanings and to soften things up but it won't get them as clean or remove major build up.
