9016 freshwater run -- no fine bubbles

Hello all,

Apologize if this turns out to be a dumb question, but this is my first skimmer so want to make sure everything is okay before I put LR in.

I'm doing a freshwater run -- making sure everything is working before filling with saltwater and LR. I had some initial problems with the skimmer not moving water but figured out I didn't have the right combo of plates in place. Now the skimmer is pumping water (not sure if it's ~4.5gpm though, flow seems lower than that), and the bubbles are very large -- not a fine mist as I expected.

I thought that skimmers wouldn't work in FW because they wouldn't attract DOCs -- not that bubble formation would be an issue.

Any thoughts? I double checked tight fitting of all the plates, the return tube (thing like a standpipe coming out of the side -- for "cabinet" operation), fit of the pump, no kinks in the tubing AFAIK from looking in the top. I've tightened and loosened the air adjustment screw through it's entire range. When it's completely closed, I get no air -- after 1/2 turn I get large, intermittent bubbles. Opening it through wide open gets me a few more bubbles (closer to a continuous stream, but still kind of bursty). Not sure what else to check. Any help is appreceated.

Thanks much,

-Ian

This is completely normal for any skimmer they do not work in freshwater as the bubbles as you have seen will be large

As Shawn said, saltwater is required to produce fine bubbles, you can see the same with an airstone, in saltwater the bubbles are much smaller from the same air stone then they would be in freshwater.

Great, thanks guys. One less thing to think about :-)
