93 Gallon Stocking Questions

Some of you may remember my post about how my dad and I were planning to get a 300 gallon marine land deep dimension tank. We were planning on getting it but we found out the floor we were planning to put it on is bult up to be leveled and would not support the tank. Since that was the only place in our house a tank like that would fit we were pretty bummed. However we just purchased a 93gallon marine land deep dimension cube yesterday and we are very excited.

Since is is going to be our first FO tank we really want to do it right and do all our research. So i have come up with a prliminary stock list and I just want to know if this would work out.

1 Picasso triggerfish
1 Zebra Moray Eel
1 Dogface Puffer
1 Harlequin Tuskfish

What do you guys think?
Do you for see any problems?
How would you stock this tank?

Thanks

Looks like a good mix. However, I'll mention that my Arothron puffer (S&S) took several bites out of my SFE's dorsal area (which fortunately healed up perfectly), so I traded it in because it turned into a real fin nipper.

i would say the tank is a bit small for all but the eel. the reason is not the size of the tank but rather the dimensions. the marineland cube 93 is 30"x30" and doesn't quite offer enough "straight-through" swimming room for fish that get to 10-12". it is probably ok for the puffer but i think it's too small for the picasso and tusk. now if you have the regular 90g (48" x 18"), i'd say it'll probably be ok for a long time, until they reach their full adult size.

+1 good call on tank dimensions. I think even a long 90 could be on the small side for a large, active fish like the tusk (and you hardly ever find them small). Niger triggers, IME, are slow growers, but get quite large and would also outgrow a long 90 quickly, and the cube even faster.

OP, would you reconsider your fish list? Maybe have a medium sized lionfish as a showcase fish and get rid of the trigger and tusk? IMO dogface puffers are okay with lions, but I wouldn't risk any other puffer species with one.

That's funny Lisa...i never had any trouble with my Diodon, but lots with the Arothron.

I DO like your medium lion idea... ;)

But was your Arothron a dogface or S&S? Most Arothrons, IME, are kind of aggressive, or at least very aggressive eaters. If you recall, one of the worst (aggressive) puffers I ever had was a Diodon - it tried (or succeeded) in killing a dogface puffer and also harassed a h tuskfish. I have found dogface puffers to be very different from the other Arothrons. But I'm only speaking from a sample size of 4 or 5 over several decades. :)

I agree. A Tusk needs a lot more than 30" of swimming room. they're outer-reef fish and cover almost as much water as tangs.
