9410, whats with the filter sock?

Thinking about the 9410 for my 90 gallon tank with a 30 gallon sump. Probably 100 gallons of water.

I think this will be the quietest option for me, and has the footprint that fits nice in my sump.

But whats with the filter sock? Seems like just adding more maintenance?

I like the filter sock, but you can run without it. I have run without it when leaving on a trip, otherwise I change it every 3 days. I find it very convenient.

most people use the sock when setting up the tank to polish off any impurities in the tank it's up to you leaving it or removing it after it's been cycled if you end up with a lot of waste and food in your sump like i used to have you will want to leave it there cause it helps with that and it's totally washable you dont have to replace .........................

You keep cleaning it every couple days until you get sick of it and remove it forever. At least that's what I did when I owned a Tunze 9440. It's just a cool option that Tunze added. I never liked it and removed mine.

The filter bag serves two purposes, it acts as a bubble trap and it utilizes the energy of the skimmer pump to provide the final stages of filtration, basically one pump handles skimming, mechanical and with the addition of carbon or phosphate remover to the bag, chemical filtration and this provides a very energy efficient all in one filter system. It is a standard 4" filter bag so you can purchase other micron ratings if you prefer.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Seems like a good system to me, I'll just have to find one in stock, in Canada this time though eh. lol
