A ~19,000 Gallon Aquarium

those cages don't look like they will keep fish and other critters from being sucked into the flow and chopped up.

I agree. It might be a good idea to supplement the existing bars with some crossbars, or wrap some sort of mesh around them. It looks like the bars will prevent really large fish from reaching the propeller, but I think smaller fish (like the school on Pg. 30) could fit between them.

I agree. I would wrap the whole thing loosely in black plastic landscape mesh (large holes) so they don't plug. You can tie it together with fishing line. This will draw the same water volume/rate but spread out over a greater area so critters don't get sucked in easily. Alternatively, you could build a "cage" out of black eggcrate held together with black cable ties.

You may have to make a whole in the housing so water can freely pass through. It is possible that a cage may not restrict flow volume or patterns at all. H2o Eng will be able to give better info.

WOW i just read 785 out of the 787 post sorry Mr.wilson 2 of your post were just to long but everything of yours has been great, i think this build is great, i hope one day to make it to that side of the world so i can see it up close. now i do have a question that pope'd in to my head as i watched your video. what do you plan to feed the tank??

to maybe help with your filter system i think your putting to much new saltwater in the system. i saw that you had the pump turned down to about 10% new water 90% old water and thats a good start but i think you should get a smaller pump to pull from the sea and turn you big pump in to a closed loop. one other reason i would do this is because i think you have to much water going thru your sump. i would run a T on the output of the pump run half to the sump and half to the display. this would not be hard to do a matter of some PVC and you can just run it over the wall and paint it to hide it.

one other thing did you ever find out where the fish came from??

im sure i will get some more ideas/questions to ask you in the coming days.

32 pages and i still have 5 tabs of links i have not even looked at. where did my day go?

I can only wonder how amazing it is to have a tank so large you can literally watch entire schools of fish roaming.

I wish you years upon years of success with this, coupled with intense jelousy of how badly I would love to own something of this scale lol

H2OEng had a grill-type protection on a customization on a similar pump. I just don't know where to get the grill thingy :). Will do it though..

I commend your commitment. I usually don't read though much of the threads, just skim and look at pictures :). To answer your questions:
  • Feeding: The tank will be fed smaller live fish, squid, sardins, clams, and other stuff that the marine research center say is good. Did I mention the fish market is just on the opposite side of my house? :)
  • Water Circulation: My tentative plan is to have the pumps pulling from the sea be used as a closed system. Circulating the water between the refugium, aquarium, and fish farm (aka fish spa) and have a small pump on the saltwater well on 24/7 pending the quality check on the saltwater well. I can see that the water in the saltwater well is much clearer than the sea but I need to dig deeper.
  • Mystery Fish: The workers actually caught the fish, and they keep catching new ones. I tell them to stop but I think the enjoy it.

those pumps are sweet! bigger than i expected. looking good! awesome video too great to see those fish surging!

the propellers look absolutely diabolical, like out of some Terminator movie! ha! I agree that they need better cage protection.

nice to see this project come together.... water, fish, circulation... you are well on your way, congrats!

You have been following this since the start. I hope it was a good ride until now.. :)

Maşallah... :)

:)

I understood what you typed but we don't have the letter between the two "a"; the one that looks like an s. And thank you :)

Insallah! Hal tatakallamu alloghah alenjleziah? :p

LOL. You should of asked if I spoke Arabic and not English :D. I have ~800 posts that shows I do speak English.. :D:D

I got to visit the tank yesterday in person :) Nahham is very hospitable and if you visit, hope you get to try his avocado shake :)

Great to see it and will be even better as the tank moves along closer to completion. You do not understand the shear size of it until you are sitting in front of the tank. Great thread and enjoy coming and reading all the informative posts.

No one said anything about an avocado shake! I'm booking my flight now! You sure know how to litterally sweeten a deal Nahham :)

It was a pleasure having you over. It took a while to convince you to try anything but I'm glad you eventually liked the drinks. Hopefully next time I will actually invite inside the house; we had renovations going on and there were no guests allowed inside (wife rules) :D.

You are welcome any time. If you come over we will have a feast, and I'll invite everyone from the local reef society.

It was funny how we had a lousy light (150w) lighting up a fraction of the tank and yet we sat there for a long time looking at the small fish, the not so small fish, the grouper, and the crabs. I can't wait to see how it will be like when it is all finished. I was worried for the crabs because Jill kept saying it will look good on a plate :D.
