A ~19,000 Gallon Aquarium

that's astonishing amount of skimmate...but seeing the size of your tank,it may be normal...
does it chunk out such amount 24/7..?

Truthfully I don't know because I'm travelling right now. However, when we started running this new setup, it didn't produce skimate all the time and it was greenish.
This is one of the coolest projects I have ever seen!
Thank you seanathen. It is mostly fun working on it. :-)
you can use pool ozone generator too!
it really capable of of 20000 gallon pool

I think there are some considerations regarding it being too much and therefore hurtful to the system. Also, the total connected water volume in the tank is around 45,000 gallons.
that is some crazy skimmate, where does all that nasty stuff go to?
To skimate heaven :-)
Actually we havent decuded yet. Most probably though it will end up in the hole we dug as a well but havent used.

If you want better control of the flow, you should consider either a gate valve or better yet a diaphram valve instead of the ball valves you are using. Just a thought...

Thank you for your suggestion. I, however, already have a collection cup:

It has a couple of changes that was required so I had to send it back. I'll be getting it back soon though.

Nice. I presume the verticals were flat sheet that was bent and baked instead of you buying 600mm and 800mm diameter sections of tube?

I have no idea. I can ask if you are interested though. For me, as long as it does the job the means doesn't really matter.

Are you having them put holes in the top so it can relive internal pressure and allow skimmate to rise?
They made the holes but made it too close to the centre of the cylinder so I asked them to move the holes closer to the outer edge. Also, the collection cup did not hold very well on the neck of the skimmer so we designed a different approach that I'm hoping will work.

THat skimmer must smell great. Do you think that the skimmer will help with water clarity?
Since starting the skimmer, the water has cleared up greatly: from not being able to see a foot into the tank to being able to see all the way to the middle of the tank (nearly 8 feet) in under a week. I'm hoping that the skimmer is the reason. I am sure some mechanical filtration will help as well but I can't figure out how to integrate it for easy installation and replacement.

System Update

System Update

Hello,
I just wanted to share some of the updates I have on my system.

aquarium1-2011-06-01.jpg

Some shading for the refugium and fish farm areas. I am planning for some more shade on the front and back and sides as well. Also, shading will be up for the aquarium itself. More on that when it is installed though. You can see the venturi in this picture as well. Some of these will be summer shading only, so it will be removed during winter.

A close-up to the fish farm shading. It is just a re-adapted ACE shading. There is a lot of algae in the fish farm. It is not showing up in the aquarium though, maybe because of the water movement difference?

The DIY skimmer is skimming. :inlove: :inlove:
The stick you see there is my remove-skimate-from-the-top stick :)

Wow there seems to be alot of organics in that water, and you mention alot of algae in the fish farm have you thought about using mega algae scrubbers to purify the water on screens and then harvest the algae that would be a very useful and uncomplicated way of removing nutrients from the system and all it requires is the screens to have sufficient flow over them and sunlight!
And then for you manually to scrape the algae off weekly , this would concentrate algae growth to the screens away from the tank.

My whole fish farm is acting as one big algae scrubber :)
I read about algae scrubbers and thought they were interesting but never had the time to implement it. Now that I have a bit of time on my hands I might try it. Actually, I was thinking of a way to change the 'overflows' from the aquarium to the fish farm because they are horizontal and not vertical which allows many of the fish to fall into the fish farm since the overflows are 2 inch wide. It makes sense to install a some pipes with elbows and an algae scrubber on the other side. hmmmm..

my question is: where does the skimmate go from the collection cup? i see the option of sending it straight to the ocean. which actually is in no way i see of dumping pollutants but rather returning the minerals back to nature :)
