A ~19,000 Gallon Aquarium

Hello Nahham,
You have a great project going there! I applaud you for taking the time to hear everyones opinion and shaping your plans after gaining the knowledge.

These small pumps (about 16" long x 8" dia.) are utilized for aquaculture and perform very well. The 1/2HP unit run 1200GPM @ roughly 600watts, with a throw of 50 feet. These wattage and flow #s top even the Tunzes for efficiency:) If you put one on an actuated mount, you could sweep the tank back and forth with great results. They also make a 1HP model that throws 2200GPM. They can be supplied in your voltage as well. Their bigger models would probably be too much for the smallish 19,000g tank:D

Mr.Wilson has covered the bases very well for you, as well as many other posters. I would second the notion to call Paul at Oceansmotions and talk your system through with him. His machine shop can make anything:)

I wouldn't of done it any other way :). Thank you for taking the time to join us. We heard good things about you.

Those pumps look vicious :). I'll try to find more about them. The number are certainly amazing: flow and watts. The smallish tank comment broke my heart though :D. When I read it I distinctively looked at the tank thinking "how could I've made it bigger?" :D

Yeah I had great help here from the start of the thread. I hope it continues forever and ever and ever :).

I am planning to call Paul. I usually take notice when someone mentions a person, but then if another does as well, I take it as a sign. :)

Iwaki is one of the few companies that makes a 5HP magnet coupled chemical (saltwater) pump. I don't remember the output, but the last 5HP pumps I used where from Spain and they produced 22,500 gph.

I spent a while looking at Iwaki's website, I like those pumps. I had the idea to contact one of my friends who is in the business of water treatment and will see if they know of chemical-handling pumps that has the same flow-rate I'm looking for. Easier this way.. I hope..

Iwaki MDH series have carbon bearings so they are run-dry safe. If the 19,000 tank is running dry you have bigger problems than the pump burning out though :)

I use iwaki and you cant fault those pumps but make sure they never run dry or that is the end of them

I read that this particular pump can run dry.

Very, very true. Mr. Wilson wins the understatement of the year award!

How bad can it be? I can throw the fish back into the sea and I'll be helping the local habitat.. :D

"the last 5HP pumps I used where from Spain and they produced 22,500 gph"

These centrifugal pumps would simply be for filtration or jetting, correct?

For general circulation, hard to put 5HP @ 22,500gph up against 0.5HP @72,000gph:)

If you want to really go big, 2HP @ 792,500gph (yes, 13,000gpm!) with a 31" diameter ,100rpm propeller.:D

I like the idea of 2 circulators in opposite corners, on timers. Set them to swap maybe every 2-3 hrs. A nice gyre effect while keeping things stirred up enough to be filtered out.

One prop on a sweeping motor (think huge sea-swirl) would also do wonders, but more complex to build and install.

Even better... cheap labourers from india with paddles and flippers. It's a lot safer employment than working on skyscrapers.

My Reef Addict's Article

Reef Addict's asked if I want to write an article about this tank and I said of course I would. You can find it here. It is a nice summary of everything up to this point.

Happy reading.. :)

Nass-ur-Qareeb minn annt. It's coming along really nicely and I am pushing my visit to the Middle East very soon ;). What are the plans to lit your tank for the night view? Please forgive, if I missed it somewhere.

The research center electric motor label is just that, the label for an electric motor (converted from kW, it's a 7-1/2 Hp motor). To know the flow rate, you will need the pump curve for the appropriate rpm.

Your pump label is a pump-motor assembly label from the pump manufacturer. That's why there is flow information there. Even so, that flow rate is probably at a pump-head that's lower than your application and you probably get less than the rated flow.

It's an engineering thing...

Tim

Take the cubic meters and multiply by 1000 to get it into liters, so if a tank is listed at 30 cubic meters volume, its 30,000 liters.

I'm sorry but I didn't get the first part "Nass-ur-Qareeb minn annt".

Please feel free to come by and see the tank, I had some of the guys from the local aquarium society over.

For lighting. I am thinking of having submersible lights. I'll have some photos up soon regarding that.

okay, this might be a really stupid question. but do u have to worry about anything dangerous ever jumping in there? like a sea snake maybe? i have no clue, i was just wondering with it being next to the ocean.

15 minutes of searching with Google found absolutely no clues on "Nass-ur-Qareeb minn annt". There was one mention of "minn annt", as part of the phrase "lwin minn annt", on someone's Friendster page. Unfortunately, my work computer blocks Friendster, so I can't verify the context. Searching on "Nass-ur-Qareeb" brought up nothing but this page.

"Nass-ur-Qareeb minn annt".

Nassur: Nassr : Victory
Qareeb: Close
minn: From
annt: You

Arabic words typed as pronounced in English with a slightly bad grammar and bad pronounciation...
I'm sure he meant good though
