A ~19,000 Gallon Aquarium

Congratulations on going through with a plan that i am sure many people here would like to put in motion but are far too scared to do!

Actually you might be right. I didn't have any rocks in the tank yet and the trigger might of not found a good place to settle/hide. I was told by many that some rock and some sand will help but I was so busy I couldn't handle it in time.

Lesson learned..

Triggers wedge themselves into rock work at night and a completely bar tank could have stressed it to death.

Amazing tank, can't wait to see it up and running.

Mainly, I'm just lucky to be able to do something like this. I didn't really plan it from the beginning but things started falling in place. Glad you could stop by and leave a comment. :)

Yeah I am sad I lost it. I was told I needed rock but in that particular week I was really busy, and it is not like you can pick up some rock and throw it in there. Hopefully I will be more prepared this time around.

You got my vote, nahham.

Is the water clearing slowly, or not at all?

I can't really tell, but it seems that the water is clearer than it was when there was no sand and I can see deeper into the refugium now. I'll try to put the mangrove, algae, filter media, and some live rock (at least in the refugium) in this week and see how it will goes.

I am hearing a lot of argument that this won't work with continuous fresh water circulation and this much flow. I still want to try it though :), sometimes I am stubborn like that :D. I'm not saying it will work, just that I would like to try it first before moving to something else.

It seems we have a school of tiny sardines in the tank. I am not sure how they got in there. It might be that one of the workers caught them and threw them in the tank, can't be sure until Saturday though. It is really like a mini-ocean, especially with the water not clear: you can only see what is close to the glass and they can disappear easily, it adds to the sense of mystery.

That's great! What a unique set of hitchhikers. Could they have come in with the water, somehow?

I really don't know. My best guess is that one of the many workers working around the backyard actually caught and threw them in the tank. I'll ask tomorrow and get you the definite answer. There are no way they could of gotten in through the water way; I highly doubt that.

Thank you for sharing your little project with the community. I hope to do a system a quarter of that size in my next home and will certainly be keeping an eye on this thread for ideas like circulation and also to see how your filtration scheme works out for you.

If you have not yet contacted Joe Yaiullo (justjoe) for ideas you should. He built his 20,000 gallon reef from the ground up and may be able to shed some light on what things have worked and those that have not.

Best of luck!

When will we see some current pics?

Will do soon. I just don't want to post photos of the water looking the way it does right now. I will hopefully sort things out this week and post pics after that. I emptied the refugium and currently emptying the tank. I think I'll give the sand a good clean and then refill everything. Hopefully the circulation props will get here and help with the water quality a bit. I just want everything to be in so that I could concentrate on what I'm going to have in the tank. Everything else is context; I want content :).

Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to post a comment. I have little experience and am learning throughout this journey. I did contact Joe and he was nice enough to answer and help with some questions I had. I do have a somewhat unique situation here: fresh sea water all the time and an open circulation. The plans are always changing..

Do you have a species list of what your adding?

I don't have a list yet. I am concentrating on local variety and what I manage to catch/collect will be in my tank. :)

Updates 2010.05.07

So I didn't really want to post the pictures, but since this is kinda my log I decided to post the good and bad. I've taken the photos at dusk. I'll take better photos in a couple of days and post it again. It will also show if the work I'm doing right now made any difference.

The top of the water. Does water movement affect the water quality? There is certainly not enough water movement at the moment and the water smells a bit. The props should be here soon (I hope). :)

The front of the aquarium. The children decided to play XO on the glass just as I was about the take the photos. You can see the current water quality. The water is more brownish than green now. I actually liked it more when it was green; looked more lively.

refugium-2010-05-07.jpg

The refugium is 50cm of water. Rate, if you will, the water quality :).

I'm draining everything out and taking Mr Shawn's advice to thoroughly clean the sand. I think we have a cement mixer around here somewhere :D.
