A ~19,000 Gallon Aquarium

How / What are you feeding the fish?
mgpro

ps awesome build. First time I've considered my 3,000l display small!

I feed once a day and it usually what I can find in the fish market close by. Everything is fresh or alive: squid, clams, sardines.. bread (from the bakery and not the fish market) :D

that's an intresting and amazing thread you got there , was very nice to meet you and looking forward to see you in uae, keep us posted with pics. and i mean lots of pics ,waiting to see more of your tank, good luck and regards to your wife.

any updates ?
Nothing worth mentioning without photos. I'm travelling all this month so no photos. We are nearly done with the flooring of the seating area and are getting on with the shading for it as well. The fish are doing great and I'm hoping to get more rocks in by the end of the month. I've also lowered the lights which I thought were a bit too high. They still do not interfere with the over-the-tank-seating-area.

great Build thank you for tacking the time and sharing with us
I'm glad you like it and hope you will find the next updates interesting as well.

The pleasure was all mine Pierre. It would be nice to see you in the UAE when you are around, hopefully with Maroun :)

Mashallah great tank a lot of Hamors :)

Would like to come catch one to make Kabsa lol
Those aren't Hamours but Subaitis. I am planning for more Hamours in the fish farm though. I will also have a grill next to the aquarium just in case someone can't help but taste some of the fish (in the fish farm of course and not the aquarium) :D.

Hope the rest of your trip went fine. Everyone here enjoyed meeting you.
Landing tomorrow morning in Dubai for a 1-2day connection, depending on how much time it will take to finish a couple of meetings . Wish I had the time to make the drive to Ajman though.
Will definitly plan it for next trip, around mid next month hopefully.

I've enjoyed meeting all of them. Next month sound really convenient. I am trying to get the DIY skimmer up and running and it will hopefully be done by then.

Any updates? Have you gotten the new rocks yet?

Pictures/videos are ALWAYS welcome! :D

I just came back and there is some good development. The flooring is done and it is looking good. The columns for the shading is in place as well. The rocks are "curing" in the sea. I'm wondering about how long they should be in there until they are moved to the tank.

The most interesting development though was the addition of a 2 - 3 kg grouper. It is at least 15 inches long and it looks great in the tank. I snorkelled today in the tank and it kept sitting in front of me and moving backwards a bit by bit. I think nothing will do it justice expect a video; will try to shoot some pictures and videos tomorrow.

You'll probably be able to hand feed that big grouper in no time at all!

Swimming with your fishes does sound like fun!

Good to have things moving again Nahham.
How about water clarity, alga issues are you still seeing some progress since the addition of the propellors?

The water quality: I can't really tell. I have a leak in the fish farm which necessitates the pumping of new water every day. I'm hoping to get around to fixing this soon.

Algae: I have no problems with algae right now. I do have something growing on the rocks though, which seems to like current. I'll upload so that people can ID if they can

Updates 2010.10.03

Updates 2010.10.03

It has been a while since my last 'proper' update. Here we go:
  • The flooring is 'nearly' done. I mostly like how it looks/feels.
  • The columns are up awaiting the arrival of the shading material.
  • I'm having some trouble with the fish farm: there is a leak that require the draining of the fish farm to fix. The problem with that is that the 'turnover' circulation has to be closed off for a couple of days. I don't think it will be a problem but I'm worried nonetheless.
  • Because of the previous point, I have to pump new water every day (somewhere around 5000 - 6000 gallons or so) which is not allowing the water to clear. When I stop pumping new water, the water clears pretty well, but then the water level in the fish farm becomes dangerously low.
  • Nearly (Everything?!!) is automated and connected to the Profilux 3 ex. Even the pump that adds new water once a day for an hour is connected to the controller. The lights and props are also connected and working properly. My requirements are fairly simple though..

Enough with the text, now for the photos:

A picture from the centre. Now imagine having the shades up, at night, lights on either side, and the tank is well lit.

A view of the seating area and 'stairs'.

A profile of the lights hanging over the tank. We lowered the lights a bit but it still does not interfere with the viewing from the top.

The entrance to the equipment bunker. It is a good 3x3 meters. Too bad the ceiling is a bit low.

A nice shot of my favourite fishes in the tank.

is that a parrotfish in the last pic about centerish? looks nice!
It is a parrotfish. I first though it was a Persian parrotfish (Scarus persicus), now though I not so sure though. The colours of this species is reported not to be consistent so I can't really tell. I've read that it should have a square white spot behind the mouth which this particular fish does not have. I'll have to take clearer pictures which proved to be hard with this fish.

Here are some pictures from inside the tank:

Can anyone tell what this is? I'm planning a week of vacuuming for the tank and was wondering if this needs to go as well.

aquarium2-2010-10-04.jpg

The big boss. It didn't want to come out and play today.

aquarium3-2010-10-04.jpg

My more-friendly grouper. It has been in the tank for a while now and it is always around me when I'm snorkelling.

aquarium4-2010-10-04.jpg

The red-toothed trigger that NEVER comes out when I'm snorkelling or when someone is close to the glass. I wonder how long it would take for it to adjust. When we are far away I see it swimming all around the tank. It looks healthy otherwise.

Man Amazing..........
I am a Novise really but just one suggestion thou if you wanna put corals and stuff remove the Parrot Fish. it can really reek HAVOC on the coral's man.
Your tank is coming along pretty well
