a bit concerned...

G.SMITHII

New member
well my g smithii went into a molt at the beginning of august.

he came out around the 20th, and all seemed well.

but then after being out and about for a couple days, he has sealed himself back up, and has been so for about a week.

is this like a bad sign? i have never really seen this behavior before, and it concerns me.

any advice?

Sounds like Hairy, my G.chiagra
Its not uncommon for me to see him close up for 2 - 3 weeks, pop his head out for a week if that, then barracade himself back up for 2 - 3 more weeks. He usually does it just after I added a bunch of snails but sometimes he just does it. I think he is hoarding the snails in his pantry and then comes out when he needs to go grocery shopping again.

ok, i mean i do hear sparratic clickings that could only be bane.

just wanted to make sure that its not like something they do before they die or sumthin.

i just miss his inquisitive twisty eyes, and constant threats...

My Chiragra does the same thing as Thurge's, and quite a bit at that. He'll hole up for a few weeks, come out and take a look around, refuse to eat, and go seal himself back in the cave for as long as he feels necessary. There has been like half a dozen times I was sure he was dead cause I didn't see him for what seemed like a month. But he always pops back out bigger and meaner than ever.

I wouldn't be worried if you do still hear the mantis clicking away. If you are using frozen food with Selcon, you might thaw some out and pour a little of the wated in the tank, that helps motivate Thor to stop being shy and come out of his cave.

my friends mantis went into hiding after he put another mantis in a critter carrier into his tank. It was a G. chiragra in the carrier and a P. ciliata (sp?)as the main tank resident.

It would only come out just enough to get food and peer out of it's burrow, and only very occasionally.

2 months later, it died after a bad moult. My friend says it probably died of stress. it might of been afraid of the mollies in his tank. (yes it was SW)

if you just keep a close eye on him/her and if he/she keeps clicking away, then he/she should be fine. don't go poking around it's burrow. you know, stuff like uncealing it, using some sort of light to look in, things like that. it could induce unnecessary stress on the mantis, and it could end up like my friends.

I'm not too expierienced with mantis'. I'm just sayin what might be happening.

Ah man. he's still in there. im really starting to panic. there's like this spounge thats growin close to/ just over his door, that wouldn't like trap him in there would it?

i really wanna open his door and see what the heck is up, but i wont.

i can still hear clicks now and again. but im freakin out.

man i hope he is ok.

Our mantis is doing the same thing as yours. Went in about the same time as yours too. And like you, we hear clicks every now and again. It's been too long and I think we are going to peek under a rock tonite...

he came out!!!

he came out yesterday at like noon. its weird too because yesterday was really cold. like 55-60 all day long.

i wonder if it has anything to do with seasonal transitions?

he went ape shiz yesterday and took out like 4 hermits and a snail.

whew!
