A backup battery-powered air pump. In the event of power failure, your tank needs oxygen. If your house has a backup generator, awesome, keep your tank up and running. If you have a UPS, nice, but it will run out after awhile. And then the vast majority of us have no backup power source of any kind. One quick, easy and cheap way to lengthen the time until your fish go belly-up is with a battery-powered air pump.

Something like this is perfectly fine.

But what if you're not home? What if you're sleeping and the tank reverse siphon doesn't wake you up? Check out this bad boy. It plugs into a 110AC outlet...but just uses that cord to monitor your power. If it detects a power failure, the pump kicks on and runs off the installed batteries! Here's another page with more info.

I was just searching for a battery-powered air stone to protect myself and stumbled on that one. Thought I'd share.:fish1:

I have one of those. Just be sure to buy the batteries and keep them together so you can find them in a hurry when you need them.

I have one that runs on a Deep cycle boat battery.. But i also have a generator but its not on a AUTO switch ....

I guess the downside is that you have to have an airline and airstone hanging in your tank at all times.

this, plus the fact that I would need at least a couple for my 120 gal. tank. I am a fisherman and have used these for a bait bucket. they are not all that powerful. barely keep enough oxygen in a five gallon bucket with minnows. computer back up batteries are a better option, although more expensive.

Have the tank running on two big UPS.

They only power the return pumps, so should last a few hours on power failure.

Wonder how long air pumps would last haha

This is a big reason I went with ecotech. I have my battery backup hooked up to one of the pumps. I also have a generator that is portable but I don't have to freak out if the power is only expected to be out an hour. Luckily I live in a house that I haven't seen longer than I quick few minute outage in the 3 years I've been there.

Now on my 40G I need to figure out a plan. Maybe the above will be an option.

Thanks for the post.

have a gas generator for backup as we occasionally get hurricanes down here and are out of power for possibly multiple days
