A decent pic I took

I've been messing around with my DSLR trying to get good pics of my corals. So far I have 1.

I like it, the dark background really makes it pop.

Not bad. Make sure to have your camera perfectly perpendicular with the glass.

In your first clam picture, you see how it looks funky? That's diffraction caused by not having your camera at a perfect 90 degree angle from the glass.

You'll get a lot clearer pictures if you can do that. If you use a lens hood, you can just rest your camera right against the glass. Not only does that make it a perfect angle, it also helps you hold the camera really still, making it so you can get away with not having a tripod if you dont want to use one.

Thanks for the tips. What's a lens hood? Right now I'm using my old trombone case to help me steady the camera. I need to get my tripod from my dad then I think it will be a lot better.

Also for these pics I was using a Quantaray 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 LD Tele-Macro(1:2) lens, and To get it to focus I had to be a few feet away, should I try using 18-55mm lens that came with the camera?

Also I don't know a whole lot about equipment so any tips would help. I'm kinda muddling through learning by reading on different sites and looking through the manual.

Yes, I shoot the pics in RAW format and use Photo shop to edit them.
