A few beginner Questions

We're interested in starting our first saltwater tank, been shopping around, and we want something big - at least 100 Gallons.

We want to build the tank and cabinet, but were curious if there's anywhere locally that we can buy 1) a full, custom made tank, or 2) glass suitable for making our own.

Just curious.

Thanks for your help - This forum's great - it helps me learn.

Jeez - I keep thinking of more questions.

I've NEVER been able to find PetBox - can someone give me directions and help me stop wasting gas?

Thanks

Another question...

Is there a physical MARUNAKA store on the island? From the website, it looks like you can get high pressure pumps there, but do they sell anything else that's valuable?

Any opinions about good local stores for equipment, etc?

Also, does anyone have a few good links with DIY plans: skimmers, coolers, etc.?

Thanks

the biggest tank Ive seen on island for a reasonable price is about 55gal. Jeff is looking to get a big tank, but its going to cost a lot and he has to order it from mainland.

And not sure where you could get the glass to make your own. Not even sure if that would be something i would want to do..

I'd be VERY interested in hearing your recomendations as to where to dive to find good live rock, corals, etc.

Thanks.

Not sure on that personally, know there are a few people on here that go out a lot to look for stuff. just keep an eye out on here, they post up sometimes when there going.

Never heard of MARUNAKA... most of us use the internet to get our stuff. www.marinedepot.com ships APO, and I just ordered a bunch of stuff from www.bluezooaquatics.com they were very helpfull. I wouldnt even buy anything from PetBox for an aquarium unless you have to.

There used to be a place in the Kadena circle that I was told would make me a custom tank, but since then it is now tore down, so I dont know where else you could go. IF you can ever catch the old man at the fish lady, (directions are posted in a thread here) he might be able to help you out. OR- I would just take an afternoon, go to pet box here in Chatan (by the ferris wheel) and then take a trip down to the pet box in Naha and just pick one from the 2 places. I know the shop in naha had a few large tanks the last time I was down there for like 35,000y so that might be an idea.

As for live rock/sand, its all personell preference. I bought mine, its doing very well, some people go and pick there own from the ocean it does well in their tanks. Either way is good. My tank is 25g, they all have larger tanks, so they wanted larger rock. either way is perfectly fine.

MANUNAKA....what is that? -just order your stuff from online. Ive shopped at liveaquaria.com (Dr. smith and foster) and premiumaquatics.com and havent had any problems with either. Arika (okidivers) ordered some things from Dr Smith and has been waiting a LONG time for her stuff....so I dont think I will order from them anymore.

Welcome to the Group!

Thanks for the help - I'm still in learning / shopping mode.

Manunaka was listed in one of the other posts here, so I looked it up online and was curious.

I'll have to check out the tanks down in Naha. We're hoping to get a taller than average tank, and that's why we might have to get a custom.

My husband is pretty gung-ho about building the tank (and the cabinet), but it kinda freaks me out, especially since the water in a 100 Gallon tank will weigh at least 830 lbs - (add the substrate, live rock, actual weight of the glass and cabinet, we're talking some SERIOUS reasons to not build.)

I'll shop around a big for a bigger tank - Its definately good to get some input. Thanks!

For a large tank best bet is to order acyric tanks from mainland. I can give you links if you want. Muranaka??? yes, it is on 75 in guskikawa. but as far as pumps for saltwater use... never seen them there. They can special order 1/2 acrylic though. I asked about that. But VERY SPENDY! As far as hoods and stand, I design and build custom ones if you are interested. Would love to help out if you need it.

SO, who is going to man up (or woman up) and have the next get together so we can talk about this stuff face to face!

Not sure if it'll still be there, but there was a 125g AGA & stand for sale in the japan update for $200. Welcome...
