A few quick questions!

Hi there,

After doing a bunch of research, I've decided to go with a Tunze DOC brand skimmer.

What's hanging me up, is which one to get so I'll tell you guys a little about my system and hope that you can recommend the appropriate model!

I Just set up a 100gallon tank, currently it has no sump, about 4 weeks ago. I migrated everything from my 10 gallon Nano over and have added another 20-30lbs of rock (bringing me up to 40-50lbs) and supplemented the clean up crew. I've got 1 lonely captive bred false perc swimming around (will be aquiring a mate for her soon) so my bioload at the moment is negligible but of course I'm going to change that over time!

My plan for this tank is a softie/lps reef so I'm trying to decide between the 9005 and the 9010 DOC skimmers. The price difference is negligible ($85 Canadian), my big concern is would the 9010 be too much for my planned set-up. I don't want all the potential food for the corals sucked out of the water!

Also, I've been having a surprisingly difficult time locating retailers in Western Canada, if anybody knows of one (particularly in Alberta) please let me know!

Cheers

The 9010 will not be too strong and if you intend to use it in sump, the 9010 is the way to go as everything is included and the sump kit is extra on a 9005 making the price difference only about $30.

Hi there,

Thanks for the input.

Got my 9010 the other day, and so far I'm happy. It was easy to unpack and install... true plug and play! Runs very quietly!

I did have a quick question regarding how much skimmate it should be producing. Since I'm new to skimmers I'm really not too sure. In the first 24 hours it was operational it took 100ml of real dark green "sludge" out of the tank. Is this normal, light, heavy? It seemed like a lot to me but like I said, being new I just don't know.

Now, my tank was exceptionally gross because I made the mistake of asking the wrong person to look after it while I was on Christmas holidays and am still paying for it. So that probably has something to do with it don't you think?

Cheers

That is very good as they normally take a few days to break in so the skimming should only get better.
