Today when I went into work I opened the door to our outside Koi Area to find that somehow one of the 18" Koi was laying in the gravel dried up and barely breathing. I stared fish CPR right away. for the next hour signs of life were improving and it was looking good .
the whole time 3 other koi were in the same tank watching the life saving procedure. one of the fish being a older butterfly was particularly interested in what was going on and actually came within a couple inches and watched and at one time touching my hand.
normally this butterfly is a rocket and wont let you near him but this time his attitude was different.
after a while the fish was able to stay steady and balanced without rolling belly up, so I let him go and he slowly sunk to the bottom but still in a upright position.
what was really astonishing is that the butterfly came over and nudged the ill fish then backing up a second and looking at the ill fish, the butterfly came in and got his nose under the ill fish and raised him up till he could get his body underneath the fish and actaully raised the ill fish all the way to the surface where the fish could breath air from the surface. I was amazed at seeing this happen and yet the butterfly stayed there and kept this ill fish afloat till he was able to start swimming on his own. the fish is still alive and looking good at this time I hope he makes a complete recovery.
the answer to the age old question.
are fish smart ? YES!
do fish feel pain ? YES
do fish have feelings ? YES !
I don't know if I will ever eat another fish sandwich.
but Lobsters better prove there selves very SOON !!
thanks for reading.
