A great refugium lightbulb, IMHO!

Corals wont die that quickly from bad lighting IME. But iunno. A power compact 50/50 is so cheap why not get one with a workhorse ballast?

Guys, what am I missing? Why so much trouble? Why not just buy the spiral bulb Melev originally used with the spring loaded clamping socket? Isn't 6500k better than 5100k?

Albert

Thanks guys - I decided to order a small [and cheap] 50/50 PC fixture that I'll use over my QT. But I ordered the 5100K for my fuge.

Thanks for you advice.

The main issue with the spiral bulb is that it gets dirty very easily and requires a reflector. The new bulb can simply be wiped off and only requires a socket.

Oh. Thanks for the info. I purchased the bulb already and am very happy with the color. I could always change later. It just seemed like a greater hassle to locate this new bulb....

just got mine..

just got mine..

ordered from home depot... price of $13.01 I think each... for 2 it came out to around $27... oh well, no use crying over $3 on a bulb that will save me more than $3 over its lifetime..

Marc/all, we're picking up the 'coveted' bul' tonight..my cheato is not doing too great right now.

Question, we ripped out our MM fuge a few weeks ago from our sump, along with all calurpa, due to fear of the a-sexual/reproduction, whatever you want to call it issue. Now we just have the skimmer, pseudo-baffles, and some LR and cheato in the sump. Does cheato have to anchor or root in a substrate, or can it just kind of float and grow in the water alone? thx!

It can tumble over and over and over and grow perfectly fine, or it can be stationary. I find that even the plant that is furthest from the light, deep under a layer at the surface, can still be quite green. It hasn't mattered much.

Hey, I don't even remember this thread being split.

RicoJ, Home Depot can special order it, and the information of how to get it ordered is listed in the past couple of pages.

Well I guess we bought the wrong one tonight then at HD...ours says 75w (19w=75), PAR38, with "Commercial Electric" on it.. I'll just see how it works even if it isn't the right one at this point.

Get the 5100K bulb instead.

Of course, nuisance algae growing in the refugium is also okay, because it tends to not grow in the main display then.

I bought this bulb a few months back for my 10 gallon fuge--from an online vendor-- I had to buy 4 but the cost was about $12 each with shipping (guess I got enough for a few years)

Caulerpa loves this bulb apparenlty-- I bought a big bag of chaeto 2 months that had a little bit of grape caulerpa in it-- the Caulerpa was outcompeting the Chaeto-- the chaeto started dying out and the grape Caulerpa took off... I have since removed all the Caulerpa from my fuge and will see how the chaeto bounces back-- I don't have near what I started with (I pulled out some with the caulerpa and the dead strands of chaeto) but what I do have is nice and green.

I was looking at the photo of the bulb at the top of this thread and it says on the package "Warm White Light". Correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure someone will :D ) but that is'nt a color temperature of 5100k it's more like 27-3000k, right?

Just so everyone knows Menards sells these bulbs, the full line of them and theyre cheaper from them. Electrical Department, light bulb isle, and remember SAVE BIG MONEY AT* MENARDS!!
