A New Cirrhilabrus described

It is a brand-new Cirrhilabrus from Indonesia.

It was named Cirrhilabrus naokoae, Naoko's Fairy Wrasse. It would reach 7.5 cm or more and comes from Medan, northeastern Sumatra, Indonesia. It was described by Randall & Tanaka, and Naoko is my wife. Thank you, Jack.

We discussed about C. lyukyuensis and regard that it is a variety of C. cyanopleura, and then our species becomes the 46th member of the genus.

The male has a bright yellow streak on side and the distinct dorsal fin that is rounded instead a long filament that can be seen in the related C. joanallenae.

Very pretty! Is there much difference between the colors of a flashing vs non flashing male?

Behavior characteristics? Level of aggressiveness? Congratulations on it being named for your wife!!

Beautiful fish. Any chance we'll see this in the trade? Do you think this wrasse will maintain its color fidelity in captivity? Thanks for the information Dr. Tanaka.

nice one!
upon discovery of another new speciman, do consider the taxomic name...............
Cirrhilabrus Cwoods8

All guys, thank you very much.

I have kept two male specimens for a while and we described it with three specimens from Indonesia, around Medan and the depth range is said to be 10 - 20 meters, but it needs confirmation by divers. There probably is a shipper of marine aquarium fishes and tried to contact in vain. I once saw a male on a web of a shop in Sulawesi.

The coloration of displaying is not very clear but at least the tail turns brilliantly blue.

As far as agrressiveness it is a fairly peaceful fish, and did not fight one another. It is not coward; a very active fish and rarely hided into the crevices. It ate flake foods well and accepted almost anything.

Yes, it is very similar to C. joanallenae. Kuiter (2002) and Michael (2009) show it as C. joanallenae but no photos illustrated the dorsal fin fully extended. As you expect, C. naokoae is one of the members of C. rubriventralis- complex, including rubriventralis, joanallenae, and morrisoni. I miss females of naokoae; there is no information of young specimens.

The fish scarcely enters the aquarium trade and as far as I know only three individuals have been shipped to my country. Very fortunately I got two of them. Another individual was kept by a friend in Hong Kong who kindly provided the specimen to me and we used it one of the paratypes.

Please ask for the paper; www.aqua-aquapress.com

Congrats, beautifull fish. You should send me one to go with my Marjorie Wrasses and complete my collection of Cirrhilabrus named after the wives of there discoverer  Seriously, it must be an honor to have a fish in a species you have such a passion for, bear your name. The Cirrhilabrus seems to have a very healthy following and it exciting to see newly identified species showing up, its also a major bummer that most of us never see the chance keep one ourselves.

Congratulations Tanaka, a very beautiful fish. I agree with other posters, it must be an honor to have a fish named after you, may I add, a much deserved honor also.

My local LFS received four of these beautiful fish today. What would be the suggested price for these in Japan?
I do believe he is asking $200 here in Toronto. I would purchase one, but I just picked up Rhomboid from him last week.

Thanks again all friends,

In Japan it is now sold at the price of about $ 200,-.

It is still rare in market and I saw only two individuals last year.

It seems that we are quite lucky to have a few specimen to arrive at our shores.. Price is quite steep for this wrasse on our side..

Here are a couple of pics of the Naoko Fairywarsse, from the owner of my LFS. I think I may have to pick up one, he has four available and is asking $180 CDN.

Hope the pics work, this is my first posting with pictures.

Thanks, stacyd72.

Your shots are very nice, and I am so happy to see the species also in UK.

It has a very distinct dorsal fin, and it needs some patience to catch its fin spreading by camera.

I love this fish...I just got him two days ago and he is already swimming all over my tank!!! Not shy at all!!

Mr. Tanaka, what would a female look like in terms of color?

A fishstore got 5. He sold 4 and kept one for himself.

Can I keep a pair of Hawaiian Flame Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus jordani) with this fish?

Thank you

Many thanks saltywet,

Yes, I would recommend it to keep with other Cirrhilabrus; they would do well together. Now I have two male condei, and one Paracheilinus in good condition.

Female form of naokoae is not known yet, but I suspect that it has no yellow streak on side, or no high dorsal fin. I really hope to see and keep females.
