A new pair of 6100's One is quiet, one is noisy

Got a pair of 6100's and a 7095 for my 180G. I've had them installed for about 2 weeks now. They are magnet mounted, one on each end. One of them is nice and quiet, the other is not. I'm running interval 1 with the pumps @ 30% - 50%. The one on the right goes back and forth between 30 and 50 and is barely audible. The one on the left has a noticeable hum when it is at 30%. Its sort of like...

mmmmmmmm..MMMMMMMMMMMMM ..mmmmmmmm..MMMMMMMMMMMMM
My sump is in the basement and I can even hear it down there. Its like the whole tank is resonating. When it switches to the right pump, nice and quiet.

I tried swapping the two impellers, and no change.

Any ideas?

Check the bush bearing, this is the collar piece around the hole the prop assembly sits in. If it is slipped out a bit this could be the cause. If it is all the way in, try prying it out and rotating it 180 deg and reinsert it.

Ok, I'll take a look at that. Thanks

Its true. It does sound like that!

I took the bushing out, rotated it and reinserted. The pump seems slightly quieter, but its hard to say for certain. It is still noisy. The pump on the right is pretty much silent unless you are trying to hear it. The one one the left is much noisier. This weekend I'm going to swap the pumps from one side to the other and see if the problem moves with the pump. If it doesn't, its some weird resonance thing. If it stays with the pump, I will need to get this corrected.

Try also switching the entire drive unit, including the bush bearing and when you do it, insert the drive unit under water to get all the air out. Let me know the result and we will get you the parts you need. I suspect the bush bearing is a bad fit.

I swapped the pumps and the noise is still on the left side of the tank. It is some sort of weird resonance thing I guess. I really wanted this setup to be quiet. I have a basement sump, so no skimmer, return pump noise, but this I dont know how to fix.

edge the pumps up from 30% a bit. So run them from like 35% - 50%. That may get rid of the resonance noise. From what I understand there is a bit of variability across controllers such that a setting of 30% may be slightly less than that and create a hum when the pump is running at the low end.

Thanks for the reply. As far as the flow settings go, my other challenge is to find a setup that doesn't blow the SSB all over the place which is why I'm currently using 30/50% interval 1.

I am not sure what to suggest. Did you try switching the pumps and the noise stays on the left side? Is there something it can reverb off of, like a canopy? Does the holder have the rubber feet installed?

know what you mean!!!

know what you mean!!!

i had the same problem with the noise coming from 1 pump. i tried the bushing removal but it did not work. i did find that when you raise the pwr up from 30% the buzzing became less noticiable. maybe that is the trick.

seems like a bug the mgfr should try to kill...no?

i had the same problem with one 6100 louder than the other. its still there but after a few months its dulled down. still there though.

Actually, it's been a month and the hum has died down...i havent noticed it come to think of it. Or perhaps i've grown accustomed to it and it blends in with the noises of the aquarium (pumps, protein skimmer, etc). Roger said sometimes the pumps need a few weeks to "break in."

Good luck with your tank.

i just read Roger's note on holder not having "rubber feet" and it occured to me that my rubber feet fell off during intallation. i could not locate it since it fell under a cabinet and it's transparent.

Roger: how do you order those rubber things? i think that WOULD explain why one pump hums and the other is silent.

thank you.

It is our part 6200.509, I am pretty sure you can order them on Tunze.com. I have also found the feet available locally at Woodcraft. They also have a website, they come on a sheet of 40 with 10 bigger feet you won't be able to use included, it is an assortment. My local Woodcraft had them for $9. We sell them as a set of 9 for $2.78.
