A new reefers look at TBS - Shipment One

Testimonial – Part One

I’d like to give my opinion of the ‘the package’ from the perspective of a greenhorn. This is me and my wife’s first foray into saltwater reefing. Coming into the hobby with zilch experience we wanted the most painless ‘plug-n-play’ scenario that we could find. If we can make a salt tank work, than anybody can.

We scoured ‘How To’ sites, books, and watched Youtube videos. But until you actually jump in feet first nothing can fully prepare you. We’ve made our share of naïve mistakes. But at the end of the day, we have succeeded (so far), and the thing I credit mostly for this success is finding Tampa Bay Saltwater. Setting up a saltwater tank can’t be any more dummy-proof than when using Richard’s tried and true formula.

We spent gobs of money on equipment. Then we spent gobs more when we had to repurchase nearly everything, because we found out the hard way that the cheap equipment is cheap for a reason. Oh, barnacles!, did we waste money. But the way we see it, if we are going to spend so much on stuff outside and around the tank, why would we want to skimp on the stuff that goes INSIDE the tank? With the investment we were making, we couldn’t afford to fail. The funny thing is, although at first glance ‘the package’ seems expensive – look at what all you get! It’s super, super cheap compared to the alternatives. Go ahead and add things up separately and compare the tab. Doing things this way isn’t just easier, and more beautiful, but it’s cheaper by far!

When we looked at the freight prices, we decided it would be silly not to go pick it up ourselves. The money we would have spent on shipping could be better spent on a vacation. So we loaded up the hatchback and made a trip from Texas to Tampa. Tampa is an awesome tourist location so we spent a day at the beach and I even did salinity tests in the ocean where ‘the package’ would come from because I was curious. We had a great time and got a nice tan, all while saving money by picking up our shipment ourselves. Richard was awesome. He accomidated our needs. We set a pick up time and he had it packaged up and ready to go on time. He super duper bagged everything and not a drop of water left the boxes on the way home. We bought the 180 gallon package, and the first ‘shipment’ was 17 boxes! Holy mackerel. And this was only the first half?

When we arrived home I followed the directions closely and dropped the sand and the first half of my rock into the tank. It took a day to clear up and being a novice reefer I have to admit I was nervous over the cloudy water. I exchanged e-mail with Richard, and he was reassuring and helpful. For the first night I left my skimmer and UV sterilizer off so things could ‘seed’. When things did clear up, it was incredibly crystal clear. We could see the rock like looking through a window.

And what rock! The hardest part of aquascaping with TBS rock is it’s hard to decide which sides of the rock to face toward the front of the tank. Every side is covered with living graffiti. We have rock covered in red, orange, yellow and black sponges. We have found tunicates and feather worms galore. This is beautiful stuff folks. When we go to the LFS now, and see their Fiji premium rock we can’t help but laugh because it just looks like purple base rock. Not this stuff. Richard’s rock has so much stuff on it that we still see new stuff every time we look. We spend hours with a flashlight, looking in every nook and cranny. And when the Nighttime LED lighting is on, we see stuff come out we don’t see during the day. It’s fun to watch the corals and see hundreds of tongues licking the water, and see them zip inside when our light passes over.

We still haven’t gotten the ‘Package Part Deaux’ but we already have tons of cool critters; snails, a cucumber, a starfish with green and white stripes (my wife named it spearmint), a small dime sized black urchin, crabs of all sorts. We see two huge Red Mithrax crabs. Check your bags too, because I found tons of decorator and porcelain crabs in the water.

Everything seems to be thriving. We are doing some water changes and waiting for the cycle to complete. We can’t wait to see what the second shipment has in store. My wife already has a space designated for a 300 gallon tank in the house, and the first place I’ll turn is TBS.

Thank you Neptune, er … I mean Richard, for an awesome experience and so much peace of mind.

It was quite a drive indeed - about 20 hours with eating and rest stop time.

My eyes might be decieving me or it could be wishful thinking, but I have some orange and yellow sponges that seem to be spreading. It's tiny little bits that are showing up on adjacent rocks. Am I crazy? I thought the sponges don't usually make it. My wife said something about it to me and I had been thinking the same thing.

My water parameters are falling into place very nicely. I should be ready for shipment two pretty fast.

First things first though, I have a shrimp or two that I need to get rid of. It could be a pistol, but I caught a fleeting glimpse and it looked brown to me, so it might be a mantis. My soda bottle trap isn't working. Anybody try the Terminator trap? I want to get him out before I get all my CUC. Because I think my snails and crabs are disappearing.

When I get shipment two, with all the pretty stuff, I'll post lots of pictures.

I'm have the same problem with my TBS rock regarding shrimp. My bottle trap didn't work at all either. I'm hoping it is just a pistol shrimp and hopefully one day I'll spot whatever it is and be able to remove it. The clicking noise sure is annoying though.

I got my amazing rock from Richard too! Narrow down the rocks that the mantis could be in and pull them out and put them in a bucket of saltwater. All I had to do was shake my rocks in the water and all the crabs and the mantis fell out.

Do it before you aquascape! I still hear clicking and it's driving me nuts.

The orange and yellow could be tunicates--I have what looked like yellow sponge become tunicates.

Ive had a little set back. Ive had a run in with diotoms. It's spread everywhere, so I'm trying to find the best course of ridding my tank of them. I'm using Seachem Prime, vaccuming the brown sand and dust out, doing water changes, and keeping the light off. I hope they go away soon. they completely covered my sponges and i think is causing them to die.

Also, I can't catch my mantis shrimp. I put shrimp in the trap, but so many snails enter the trap I can't get the shrimp. I'm really afraid he will eat all my clean up crew, one by one.

I don't want to get Shipment Two until these two issues are solved.

Diatoms are a part of the cycle...everybody gets them while cycling...they will disappear on their own....and when they do, you are ready for part two!

The diatoms came and went, as you said. It was really a non-issue. I have to say though, with all the reading and preparing for a saltwater tank, prior to taking the plunge, I never ran across any talk of diatoms, so it took me by surprise.

My tank is looking beautiful. The water is pristine. My ammonia/nitrate/nitrite/ph is all perfect and has been. I'm ready for phase two this friday.

I've been tinkering with my aquascape. It's so hard to settle on a final design, especially since I don't have all the rock. I have the right side of the tank complete and will do the left side with the next shipment.

We discover new crabs every day. We see tons of the little buggers. We have a beautiful, massive porcelain crab. It sits in its spot and waves his yellow arms around. Beautiful. We have a decorator crab that has so much stuff glued to his back that he can't hardly walk. Our many feathers coat every surface. Our little black urchin has tripled in size in just 2 weeks (If its the same one).

We are so happy to see so much cool stuff, and we haven't even gotten the 'fun' shipment yet. I need to break out the old camera. I don't have d2mini's abilities, but I'll take shots of everything and post it.

Shipment Two arrived. I'll be busy all weekend aquascaping. It's like oil painting. Your never done, you just stop.

I'll write up my testimonial and post pics when things have settled.

I'll just say this - I can't believe how much stuff there is. I have no room left in my tank for fish! hah.

BTW, we have a huge red mithrax crab from shipment one that my wife has named Richard. I'm not sure how you will take that, but it's meant as a compliment.

Man, i haven't picked up a brush in years... but you're right. lol

I've been feeling the itch lately. I think it may be time to dig out an old canvas and gesso over it. :artist:
