A Nightmare Is Unfolding In the Great Barrier Reef

I shook my head at this news, humans were the worst thing that happened to this planet, from Eden to environmental disaster in what 300 years? But hey when there's shopping and busy human things to do who gives a rats :) party now and pay later. Poor sods who have to live here for the next few hundred years.

Not to discount this but there is also hope for recovery. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FHcsg3dnass

I like hearing about these stories, but I feel like they don't tell the full story. Yes the coral reef recovered after 10 years, but what other elements took place that could have helped this? Did FIJI implement new laws that prevented over fishing, excessive coral collection, stronger EPA laws on factory emissions and other activities that may have impacted the reefs in 2000 or did humans continue to do what they have always done and the reef recovered regardless?

I don't think we will ever see a full comprehensive study that takes all variables into effect and with good reason, it is very hard to determine all the causes. However, I do feel that Mariculture and Aquaculture have played and will continue to play a significant role in the future of natural reef recovery.

I really hope that our governments start thinking about the planet and forget the meaningless things that they discuss in congress every day. They seem to be too focused on the economy, but fail to realize that when the planet goes, so will their precious economy.

At current rates 60% of the worlds reefs will be gone in 15 years ! And gone in 30. I'm speechless, after watching david Attenborough's Great Barrier Reef series, it's hard to imagine all this will be gone.

I wonder if there will be an attempt to grow reefs further away from the equator. The acidity is an issue too, interestingly electrolysis has been used to combat this, but such a small scale.

I imagine one day the only reef we will see is the last surviving frags of our hardiest corals in captivity.

Living a few hours away from the barrier reef it's on my early bucket list now!

We see the same reefs every year or two in the Caribbean and I personally see rapid growth. Yes we need to do a lot better but it's not all doom and gloom like some make it out to be.

Remember too - this is reported by the BBC - an institution that has a long proven track record of bias when reporting and exaggerating climate change claims.

This is a much more balanced article explaining more:

Very true. Don't believe reefs are bleaching out and dying at an alarming rate like these left wing hippies want you to believe.

Assumption: sarcasm detected.
I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying read the Washington post article as it's much more informative and doesn't make the jump to conclusions / knee jerk reaction the BBC makes.

I'm still having a hard time with you criticizing the BBC then actually citing breitbart as a valid reference.

There was actually a really cool show on PBS last night about reefs and the lowering of PH levels. Very informative and didn't make it seem like the reefs are all dying off but rather, adapting.

95% of the barrier reef now effected by bleaching ! I was planning on a dive this year! Mmm I wonder what laws will come into effect around coral collection now ?

95% of the NORTHERN area of the reef. Still a large amount and likely to spread. No matter what we think the cause is, whether anthropogenic or naturogenic thinking we can throw money at it and legislate it to change is a joke. The Earth is cyclical, similar bleaching happened in 98 and I believe 2010 where something like 18% of the earth's corals suffered bleaching. I was behind the whole man made global warming thing until they started selling carbon credits, lol. Let's not forget El Nino either.

+1

I tend to lean on what 98% of scientists say and prove, call me a sheep or wanting to be in the "In-crowd" :) I wont use too much energy on this post lol. eerr +1

the washington post article correlated the bleaching events to el ninos.

I tend to lean on what 98% of scientists say and prove

I do too. Tell me or show me that 98% of all of the worlds scientists agree that global warming is manmade due to human carbon emissions - then I'll be on board with it. Until then I remain skeptical.
