A. nigripes

Super Housemonkey!
Who's got 'em and where did you get them from?
Pics are definately appreciated....

I've been interested in this clown for awhile, but have yet to see one in person, or for sale.

So I'm pretty much soliciting for those with experiances with them to join in, and hopefully, help me run down some leads for aquiring a pair.

Nick

I got one from a fellow reefer in Jersey. I have another coming in tomorrow. I lost two a few months back and lost a third a couple of weeks ago within hours of shipping.
They are very delicate shippers.
Blue zoo aquatics, marine depot and live aquaria occasionally have them.
Order at your own risk. I have several very rare and one of a kind species. Of all the ones I've had shipped, this is the most challenging.
Good luck!

mine is tank raised was about 3/4" now 4", had her for 5 years. does better when an anemone is present. would stop feeding and sulk in the corner when it's anemone was removed. it's not aggressive or shy. best to get tank raised, i'm still looking for another t-r juvenile, perhaps wetsleeves will breed his (assuming he's trying to), and make them available. i don't think the commercial breeders are currently working on nigripes.

I've got pairs of:
leucokranos
latezonatus
occelaris
teardrops (sebae/polymnus hybrids)
periderion
latezonatus/polymnus pair
sandaricinos/akallipisos pair
and should be able to pair up my nigripes in the next few weeks.

If any of these breed in the next year or so, I would be extatic and would definately be passing along babies to other clown freaks like myself. That all seems very distant right now.

Wetsleeves by all means, if you manage to breed them and rear the fry, let me know. I would love to have a pair of tank raised Nigripes.

Marc,
thanks for posting the pic. I have a purple H.crispa about that size myself.

I'd love to see more pics and hear from others who have kept them. IIRC Traveller7 has/had a pair of Nigripes clowns.

Wetsleeves,
What do you think makes them such horrible shippers?

Nick

I was lucky 2 years ago and selected 2 wild caught from my LFS and they paired up. They do spawn in the tank but I haven't had the time to try to raise the fry.

hey wetsleeves, you fix xrays? i have an xray with a messed up ankle on it...can you fix it? :)

seriously, you said 'pair up' does that mean you have two that arent paired?

Pacific Reefs, That is a nice looking pair! It would be great if you ever raised the fry to have captive raised fish to sell to some of us other clown addicts. I've been thinking about getting a pair, I wonder how many fish would have to die, before I could get two to survive the shipment. Hopefully tank raised will be a little hardier, being they are disease free. I was going to buy a pair of long term captives a couple months ago (and drive four hours each way to pick them up) but the guy moved them to a new tank two days before the trip, and one jumped to its death. Bummer!

Personally I think it's the collection practices. But that's just speculation. I'm not there scooping them up.

That means I have a female in a breeder tank and I'm waiting for a shipment to arrive with her potential mate.

Send me that X-Ray film and a white sharpie and I'll fix that right up for you!

xray-HA!

shipment-really dumb question alert-how do you know you will get a male or a juvi?

i only ask because, well, i have that luck sometimes. (see previous ankle comment!!!)

i'm still working on GSMs...they are a pair but have never spawned.

Still have them, breed consistently regardless of what I am moving around in the tank. Mom, aka Cujo, is still one of the meanest fish pound for pound I have ever had :>)

Cruddy pics in the gallery.

No attempt to raise the larvae, BUT I am moving them to a breeder from the 300gal in the next few weeks. We shall see.

Cheers and best of luck locating them in good condition.

Fwiw: Brian Thompson at Extreme Aquariums sent me both of mine over the course of a year or so. A great source and alot of patience are a necessity.

cujo - wow mine has been more like paris's dog tinkerbell in the south park "paris hilton s.s.w." episode, because of my removing so many of it's anemones.

she's actually getting protective of her new anemone and more aggressive at feeding's, still far from cujo.

pacific reefs, did you notice any changes or differences interacting with the magnifica vs. carpet?

mine seemed to play in the last sebae more than the rbta's's's's... . current sebae is still small, she's seemingly excavating all around it looking for the rest of it. already toppled corals to get them out of the way along with futile attempts at pushing a large coral encrusted rock and a large t. clam. still nothing like post anemone removal, before during and after the sulking period when she'd incessantly excavate around the anemone's last known address.

i'd rather a mag. but aren't willing to switch from t5's to halides. i'd consider replacing them with led's. only too expensive, haven't found a good source for diy parts and question a led system/magnifica, thinking the light of such system may be diffuse.

They interact about the same on the carpet vs. the mag. I had to get rid of the carpet because I was losing too many fish to it. I was worried that it would eat one of my nigripes. I searched forever for a Magnifica until one day a LFS had one and they really didnt know what it was. I just wanted a healthy Mag....not really my favorite color but I'm hoping the base will turn more purple in a few months.

Even though I have limited experience with these kind of anemones I really recommend MH only for them. They prefer a "spotlight" over them, and at least 250w 10K (14K maybe, but 6500 probably better). Not sure about the LED but the Solaris I've seen looked too dim to me. If you could just add one MH to your lighting setup then it would be perfect.

MaxxII, what anemone would you want your Nigripes to host in?

I have three different anemones at the moment...

An H.mag I've had since March 06,
The purple H.crispa I've asked about in the past.....its gotten larger now and is almost 5 inches in diameter.
And a 8 inch LTA (M.doreensis)

I know that A.nigripes is hosted only by H.magnifica in the wild...
but I dont have any real preferences as far as which anemone they go in. My Onyx percs are currently with the H.mag...

Why do you ask?

Nick
