how rare is it to come across a pair of healthy looking a nigripes that are eating like pigs.

I bought a pair from a fellow reefer a few months ago, he got them from Diver's Den about 6 months before that. They have done great.

I have heard a lot of bad stories about them not doing well, never tried them myself until I ran across this pair.

i have to dip the brine shrimp net standing at the end side of my 6' aquarium or else my nigripes will swim up bite, clamp down and flip flop around like a fish on a hook. splashes water everywhere. had my tank-bred nigripes since june '02. when i removed it's anemone after i no longer wanted to deal with rbta's it sulked in the corner and refused to eat for a few weeks. never did as well and dug up the sand looking for it up until i got it a sebae anemone. also watched in horror as one of the babies had a heart attack in the collection container when i was buying them. i can understand how wild caught would be difficult but once you pass the critical stage it should do well if you provide it a host anemone.

I would say that it is hard to come accross a pair. They tend to be incredibly dellicate fish as they are horrible shippers. A lot of the wholesalers don't like to get them in as they tend to lose them in droves. Once they get adapted to captive life they are a lot hardier but that can be hard to do.

I would probably look to buy them from an established tank if I were to buy them. Last time I ordered them I got 3 in and they succumbed to brook within a week.

I have yet to see a "pair" come in wild caught. Mine arrived in separate shipments, months or even a year apart.

Healthy arrivals are hit and miss. Most are death magnets.

They seem bullet proof and quite aggressive once established.

One of these days I raise some fry, my pair is extremely consistent with breeding intervals.

ya i would snatch them up if i had another tank for them. the were just swimming together at the LFS in one of the anemones that was sure to perish in their tanks. i just happened to be there at feeding time and they went nuts when the food went in

Same here, mine came in as juviniles a year apart. The first one came in alone and about the size of a quarter, very healthy. A year later another healthy juvinile came in and i picked him up. It didnt take long for them to pair up.

You are in NJ so you may want to call Absolutely Fish. That is where i stumbled across my 2.

I just saw a group of 11 of them in an LFS near me. They looked very good. Different sizes but even the largest probably wasn't a mature adult. The help there at he time didn't know if they were wild caught or CB.

LFS in my area has (had? been a while since I've been in) one in one of the bigger coral tanks, he's been doing great for months with no special considerations.

I think they just got seriously lucky.

talk to Rod at rods reef i think he was raising nigripes

I havent raised any yet. My anemone climbed on top of the tile that they spawn on  . If I cant pull the tile, I dont attempt to raise the fry. If I had a chance to pick up a healthy pair (and I did) I would do it in a heartbeat (again)

I see them come in from wild shipments all the times, Sri Lanka mostly. Most do not make it through acclimation period, sad to see importers bring so many in and then have them die in LFS tank, hobbyist tanks.

Once they acclimated well, they do live forever like any other skunk clownfish.
