If Oman clowns were available as tanked raised, how much would you pay for one? Although this is a hypothetical question (at this time), I would appreciate serious answers as to how much dough you would really shell out for this fish. I'm asking this because I heard that the minister of fisheries (who works for the Sultan) has been instructed to look into the ornamental aspect of culturing native fish. Just like tank raised Lats coming in from overseas, the cost of freight will add a lot to the retail price. Just wondering what someone would pay. And for any of you that think this is so far fetched it is rediculous, remember what people would have said about tank raised McCullouch's two or three years ago!

Well, this is a bit of a loaded question. I wouldn't be surprised to see the first few go for $10K a pair. Particularly in Japanese and American markets. I say it's a loaded question because the people who would be interested in paying these kinds of prices will be breeders and enthusiasts. Clarkii complex are not generally revered as being difficult to breed in captivity. Once that happens it won't take long to flood the market and see the price plummet. It's all a matter of supply and demand.

The Sultan has repeatedly rejected requests to import ornamental animals either for the aquarium trade or for display at public aquariums on the basis that he wanted control over his animals. I have always read into that that it was to prevent the exploitation and mistreatment of his majesty's animals as has happened with many other countries' reef ecosystems. I can respect that.
However, if his intentions are strictly based on control and money, than I hope they go the way of the Romanovs.
I wouldn't pay one red cent for a mutilated fish and I'd spit on the first person I met who kept them in their store. The objective no matter how distant should always be the future welfare of the species.

You've heard of genital mutilation? It's a common practice in that part of the world. It's the first thing that came to mind when you mentioned them being sterilized.
I would consider any fish that had been modified either surgically or chemically to be mutilated. Surgically modified humans don't hold much appeal for me either.

I don't know the first thing about the sultan, but I have no reason to doubt what I heard. And I heard that they are seriously looking to breed and export fish (ornamentals) and that rare/endemic fish would be sterilized.
Makes me think the guy cares about money, and not the well being of "His fish, in his ocean".

Good point. It certainly puts me in a tissy.... that said it is a hypothetical conversation. So hypothetically if I were offered an unaltered CB A. omanensis I would expect the price tag to be $2,500 - $5,000 range.... To which I would continually reply no thank you until the price came down to $200-$300 ea.
If it were offered in a less natural context I might answer much less politely (to put it mildly.)

Well it may all be rumors at this point becasue the fish are not being bred yet, but my info comes from a professor who is working DIRECTLY with the person in charge of setting up the operation in Oman. He told me to my face, if they produce Oman clowns "He certainly would sterilize them". I'm happy to change the topic of this thread, but I for one, would like to know peoples opinion on sterilized fish. Maybe it is more appropriate in the lounge? Although it may not be techincal breeding information, I thought the idea of a message board waht also an exchange of ideas. The worth of the fish should still be the same-if all you wanted was a pretty fish swimming in your reef.

Asian carp-weren't they all supposed to be sterile too? I'm not an alarmest-but there are some people-(some of them legislators) that if they had their way-every non-native fish would have to be sterile. Anyway-at this point I'll drop it. Just wanted to know what people would be willing to pay for such a rare clown.

When I read the title of this thread I got pretty excited, because for the last 5-6 years I have been looking at the Oman clownfish pics and wondering if I'll live long enough to see one in person someday. I might just be able to see one now...but not so sure about seeing sterlized Omans. If the intent is to make money and keep them under control so that others can't breed/see them in their natural form, I'd say that is not what this hobby is about.
