I was offered a couple of frags of this coral for some of my blue hoekesemai. Is it illegal to own if it is sent to you from another reefer? He has had it for years he told me and is always fraging it. or should I stay away from the forbidden fruit.
thanks
Michael

I say stay away. I'm no expert by any means, but I know with any thing else, if it is illegal, it is illegal. If you get a bag of marijuana or Cuban cigars from another person, rather than importing them yourself, you are still in deep doodoo:D

Also, no offense to stony mahoney, but I wouldn't post any pictures if I were you, either. I seem to recall reading about someone who showed or talked about some illegal Caribbean stuff on this board, and had the fish and wildlife people show up at his house.

None taken Stoner :) Guess you can't smoke up the evidence! lol What makes it so special? Just a rare species? Ill go look it up on Whelkaims.

I'm almost positive once it's imported (how ever it gets here) it's legal to have. It's the actual importing, collecting that's illegal. Similiar to the Clarion angels in Mexico.

Clarions aren't protected in the states, but that coral defnintly is ;) It's a whole different deal.

hmmm

hmmm

well why is it illegal? Is it endangered? If so they shame on everyone here. If not, explain why.

cheers
David:lol:

Its not illegal to have in your tank. If you claimed to have gotten it from the wild then you'd be in trouble. Those laws were not around forever, some of these illigal corals were in the trade before the laws. They cant make those people who owned them then return the coral.

I just did a google search on the coral and I'll pass. Doesn't look like anything I'd really want in my tank anyway. Not very pretty in the pics. If it were more pretty or jaw dropping I'd want a piece.

Take it ! this coral had been collected long before they posted a ban on the specie. I used to have one, died when my tank overheat 4yrs ago. Needs tons of flow and light. Some reefers still have'em in there tank they just not claming they have one.

It can't be illegal as long as it is not wild collected. Getting it from a fellow reefer that has had it in his tank for years before the ban came into place is only sharing. PLus I really don't think that Fish and Game or customs will be coming to your house and checking your reefs for illegal corals. Unless it was imported from some other country. And I here some that they are so business that they only check 10 to 20 percent of cargo shipped to the US. So go ahead and trade for the peice just make sure you see a recent picture and it looks healthy.

Also if the government came to our houses and started checking stuff; they would think kalk is cocaine and we would all be in jail.:D
