A quick plug for the dum dum dum FISHBOWL!

Hey everyone. I'd just like to say that I was at the fishbowl today, saw no dead fish, a couple really nice coral pieces, and believe it or not (Josh) mexican turbo snails. Just trying to be fair with my posts, and if you fishbowl folks are watching, looks a little better.

my .02

i never had a problem there and i never got any mis information from anyone there either, if she or lorenzo doent know they say i dont know let me research it and the fish bowl is the only store that everything i bought from there lived even corals and all she has is a coralife pc on the coral tank. i like everyone there they are always helpful to me. and maria is funny and always clls me to say she got what i ordered and price i always fare but i do alot of special order

Not to get too far back on the bash wagon, but if you're gonna have a store that sells corals, I think you should have the needed equipment for those corals. She doesn't even have PC lights in there. Much less skimmers. That is really my biggest complaint. I will say that I buy a lot of stuff there, it's the only store near Dover.

way to fricken much..ur there every other day

well... that's good to hear Josephus, like they say back home, even a blind hog can find an acorn now and then......

You know, if corals don't stay too long in a low light environment, they just think it was a few cloudy days and go right back to doing what they were doing, when the sun comes out again. Just a thawt.

i have rescued many a dying coral frag from the remnants of once large corals for sale. Just a tip is all that is needed. with a little care, that lone frag once again grows to become a large mother colony. It is how i collect genetic diversity for my tanks. I can't afford a lot of big center piece corals. so i rescue bits and pieces from the dump tanks. not all make it, but many do. it's amazing how small a piece, maybe one or two polyps, even on acros, can survive and grow, in the right conditions. life on all levels strives to survive. i just give them a chance.

I agree with that, what I was getting at was that they don't really allow their customers what THEY need in order to permanently house these animals. Even with their display corals under PC's, they only sell NO lights. You would think someone would realize this isn't the best use of retail space. If I am new, and the store tells me I need PC's, I buy PC's. If the store says NO will do, I buy normal output. Seems it would be beneficial to the store to offer some (slightly) higher range products. At the very least I'd like to see:

PC lighting
Skimmers
Sump/Trickle filters

she has all of that stuff i was just there and she had a few skimmers and some pc lighting by coralife !! the store might not be the best but they have all of what you are talking bout in this thread but the trickle filter but she does have a wet/dry and she can order anything you want and if your nice you might get a dicount i get FREE stuff from her all the time. just my .2

i have gotten few corals like that and one was a gonipora and it has that bud growing on it so it posably will give me a baby eventually and i got a rock of zoos and they looked dead but i got them cheap!!! and now the rock i bought is covered and i keep sitting it here and there so they can spread!!

nice piece of advice ken!!

I bought a Gonipora from her a few months ago. It was doing fine until recently. Still alive but slowly diying. If you could rescue it, please let me know.

Man, if so either she was hiding them last night, or they just came in. The only skimmer I've ever seen in there is the used one that was (and may be still) sitting on the front counter. But if they got that stuff in, good for them. I'd really like to see that store do well, just so they would carry more.

Goniopora have a pretty dismal survival rate. some of the collection practices seem to promote disease and in the wild they are found in much more turbid water then your typical reef tank. if you have a sand or gravel substrate i would stir it up stream from the coral every day and also sprinkle zooplankton (cyclopesezee or rotifers) on it everyday. the red Goniopora's seem to do much better in captivity then the typical green ones.

yeah stirring up detretus is a great idea for two reasons. one it cleans the sand bed and two: it feeds filter feeders in the tank. keeps the tank cleaner.

Yes, most of the surviving frags of larger corals i have bought have been cheap. i cruise my local shops and make an offer if one is just about gone. or broken off pieces. LFS lighting and water are not always idea to house them long term and they soon decline. sometimes a piece can be saved. if it's reasonable. It's a gamble. i buy it and if it survives, well in a couple years i have a fine new mother colony. but it takes time and care. i used to live for TFP's dead and dying coral tank, anything in there, five bucks. some made it, some didnt. but, little ventured and sometimes much gained. I'm always looking for new genetic diversity.

The art is in the growing... i have restarted xenia populations from a single polyp 1/16 inch tall. they do strive to survive, given reasonable conditions.
