A Reef in the Sky...scaper

I have been reading this thread and your set up is really nice. Did you get your light from fish-street? Recently I query the Maxspect and they suggest the KEY to me. Have you ever see the KEY in action? I like the Maxspect because they have the high watt blub and optics. I am rebuilding a 72" and thinking to use LED to replace the old MH fixture. BTW, you live in Shatin? Nice view of the river :-)

Thanks - I don't like the KEY's because of their low luminous output, or fish-street.com for that matter, that guy isn't really honest.

If your tank is a LPS/softie tank then the KEY may work for you, otherwise look elsewhere.

p.s. Yes I live in Shatin :)

Do you ever have this problem from using NP pellet?

Yes I do get a little cyanobacteria in shaded spots like the one in your photo from time to time, but it only appears when:

* My GFO is almost exhausted thus there're some additional PO4 in the water column
* Shaded areas with lower flow

I've previously used KZ Coral Snow to combat it with some degree of success, but I think the most important thing is to make sure you've enough flow in your tank, and lower than 0.03 ppm PO4. Once I've replaced my GFO the cyano receeds again.

I just clicked into this post last night and is surprised by the amount of members from Hong Kong.

I just started my new tank and is using 2 400W MH and a BM150 skimmer with a DSB in a refugium.

Thinking of adding 2 T5 super actinic. Any suggestions?

Where are you guys getting your corals? Maybe we can all meet up sometime to share our experience......

this is before I upgraded the seio's to TUNZE 2 6055 + 7096.

Photo taken by an iphone.....I can't get my Canon G9 to take nice photos....maybe I am not using the right mode.....

Did you check the TotM also from Hong Kong?

Just sent you a PM about where we normally hangout online.

What's the dimension of your tank? Seems like a 18" cube?

had to subscribe to this thread, your tank looks amazing. love the LEDs

Great to see a plan come together! awesome tank!

Thanks guys! :)

yea - I saw the TOTM and is amazing!! I once consider going with zeovit but I want to test out the old school method - DSB and macro algae.....

do you know where I can get some cheato? can't find any in HK!!

I don't think I've found any cheato in HK either, some of the shops in fish street have macro algae but none are cheato.

Is the Maxspect 160 Extreme available in Hong Kong? Hows that compare to the G2-160?

There isn't any Extreme version available here, I think it's exclusive to US/Canada only.

Mine is similar tho, with the same layout but without the chrome finish of the Extreme, I had to order the optics separately and install them myself as well, the optics are pre-installed on the Extreme.

What about Zeobak, i was reading that Zeobak+Coral Snow will really get rid of cyano and Zeovit recommends using it together.

Zeobak is just a blend of bacteria that utilize carbon source (aka VSV) that is already growing in anyone's reef tank, I don't see how it'd help combat cyano except by drawing additional nutrient out of the water column.

Since the cynao I'm having is really limited to very few spots and isn't a big problem I'll leave it as it, I just don't want to introduce another strand of bacteria into my tank fearing it may tip off the equilibrium in it.

I've already emptied 1 250ml bottle of KZ CS before (but without using zeobak) with minimal effect to the cyano.

Local reefers have tried ZZ + CS + zeoBak to combat cyano, and have mixed results.

Again I'm talking about small spots of cynao here and there and it's not an outbreak so I tend to just ignore it.

Learning LEDs

WOW, Just spent good part of the day reading the entire thread. Thanks for sharing your build, lot of time involved! Picked up a lot of info on your LEDs. Will make good use of it.
Thanks Bond

This is shaping up to be one of the nicest tanks getting around at the moment mate. Well done.
