A Reef in the Sky

I would go with an all black background. Blue will take away from the corals.
This is the dilemma I've been facing. I'm having a sample back ground made up and if I'm not happy with the transitions of blue I may just go with black.

I wonder if black background will make the coral colors pop or not...:hmm1:
From my research, black seems to make corals POP more than blue.

It'd be sweet if you could get an overflow cover that matches the background.
I remember a thread a few years back of a guy I think who was in the Sacramento, CA area that did a similar background. It looked really nice, weatherson I believe was his RC name. I'll look for his thread.
True, this is also another dilemma. I'm hoping to have some rock structure in front of the overflow (more on that shortly) and let the corals grow out with time.

Okay...I need one of those now! Loving your "tech-savy" plans.
:lol2: Cheers Craig

Excellent... thanks for the link. I hadn't seen his thread. Fortunately I've still got time to make adjustments to the back ground if required. Thanks again.

are you planning on building the tank yourself? if so, please add pics and details.

love the electric retractable lights.

Looking great. You guys on the other side of the world dont fool around when it comes to reef tanks! Will the structure the casters are fasten to be steel or wood contruction?

The tank/stand/cabinet is currently being built for me. I'm happy to provide all the pictures and info that you and others would like to see.
As for the lights... hoping all my measurements are correct!

:lmao: I know, there are certainly some great tanks out there. They are all to blame. :lol2: Funny enough I've picked up a lot of equipment/accessories from the US.
The sump tray will be wood and the casters will be attached to that. I have some more detailed drawings. Let me know if any of you want to see. Tks

Couldn't you have someone spray or airbrush the fading background you desire? You could even have it done on a thin sheet of acrylic or lexan if you dont want to paint the tank.

Water Circulation

Trying to come up with a plan/layout to create good flow for the corals, fish and to carry away waste has been a lot harder than I thought. Plus, I'm trying not to have pumps and cords going everywhere. Anyhow, below is what will be used for water movement.

After much consideration I decided on using one return pump instead of two. The main reasons are less noise, wattage and therefore less heat being produced. However to ensure this is the case I have gone with a RD 6.5m3.

The final part of the water movement involves having a mini closed loop system within the tank itself. I want to minimize potential dead spots and this concept should help. I will use a Eheim 1001 pump rated at 600l/h.
***Remember the internal overflow has been moved inwards and is no longer at the edge. These are old pics but you should get the idea.

An idea of where the piping will go. I'm tempted the even drill some holes in the pipe at certain places to create more/random water movement. (IE: bounce off rock work and the outside of the overflow)

hi bro... nice tank.... one question.. How do you prevent rust on your steel structure? is there any form of coating you use??

The next challenge was to decide what background colour to have?

Black, Blue or nothing?

Nothing for sure

I already tryed black, blue and nothing in my tank and I can say that nothing is the better

If you see the SunnyX reef you will understand

Best Regards

Airbrushing was initially the plan but it was hard to find someone here to do it plus it was pricey. So I've elected for the pattern to be printed (on material similar to contact for books) so it can be attached to the tank.

this looks like it'll turn out to be an awesome project! subscribed =) keep up the good work

Thanks

Thanks... Powder coating and painting seem the most practical. I opted for stainless steel sliders as they are a little more resistant than normal steel.

Thanks guys... it is a tough decision. I'm very familiar with Sunny's setup... superb. From memory though he actually painted the wall behind his tank a slight blue colour, not really an option for me.

Rockscape

The hardest part of this whole tank designing/building process so far has to be this. After many hours of looking at others rock-scapes here is a layout that I've come up with so far.

Plenty of room around the edges for cleaning the glass, coral to grow and fish to swim.

Between the island on the left and the main rock structure on the right I'm hoping to create a sense of depth.

This is the view that will be seen from the lounge area

What do you think? Any suggestions?

Rocks look a little small. Don't know if that matters much to you but I always lean to slightly larger pieces.

I really like this aquacaspe

Do you want to clean the back glass ? If yes, maybe the rocks are a little close

Best Regards

Amazing work. If I could go back, I would definitely designate a lot more time to the "planning" stages. That is the most important part IMO. A lot of headaches can be saved with just a little extra pre-thought. Congrats on your work so far and best wishes for a happy ending  I'll definitely be watching! Rockwork looks good. I do agree with using a few larger pieces to make your structure more solid. It may be hard finding pieces in the shapes/cofigurations you like, but it will be worth the extra effort in creating a long lasting and solid final structure.

If you have not done your background yet try a vinyl sign shop. They have vinyl to make signs and letters like what you would like. Just take them your rendering and size and they can order it for you. On our tank we used a see through 1/8 inch tinted blue over a 1/8 inch white solid color. It creates a little more depth to the tank when the back lid is down.

Very nice build great sketch up work.

Keep the updates coming.

No worries, thanks for the input Nate. I agree, they may be a little small. Will try to make the 'island' slightly higher as I want to place a few different types of Acropora corals on it.

Cheers... yep, looking to keep the back glass clean but will probably leave the overflow alone since rocks and corals will hide it.

Thank you Aaron. I had a look at some live rock today and I'll try to get some larger pieces. Finding the correct pieces will be the challenge. I often read that people want to redo their rock structures so I thought I'd put some thought into it beforehand.

Thanks Mike. I have sent many e-mails off to the US vinyl shops but have received few replies. Will see how the sample here is and if I'm not happy will look into getting it made in the US. Glad to hear it creates some more depth though... just what I'm after.
I was thinking of having a piece of acrylic made the same dimensions of the back glass panel and resting it against the back. Then putting solid black colour on one side and fading blue on the other. Then I could turn it around when required to create two different settings :fun5:

Planing, "It's a good thing" the end result will be very rewarding congrats:thumbsup:

Thank you... I'm hoping so.
