A Reef in the Sky

I came back to this thread via an email link. I don't know What-the-F I was thinking when I posted the quote below but I was unable to edit or delete it. I do not remember typing it and I am starting to question if it was even me because it does not seem like something I would type. Let this serve as an apology for cluttering up your awesome thread with garbled crap. Also, please excuse this reply from doing the same as well.

Your system is very inspiring! I think perhaps I drank a little too much and started admiring your tank and then became jealous. Great work mang, I can't wait to see your progress :)

Maybe a "drunk-post"???

Beautiful design and excellent execution!! I've been following you thread since the beginning in hopes to duplicate what you have done with my next tank. But every reef fiend needs their fix, so can we get some updates? Pics are always welcomed.

What is your dosing schedule? How many ml's per day and how many times per day?

What's you bulb combo and how many hours per day?

What are your parameters? ALK, CAL, MAG, SG, Temp?

I know you have answered these questions before I just want an update to see whats changed and whats stayed the same.

A rather probing question, but would you mind telling us the approximate amount that you spent on the equipment and set-up of this tank. I am relatively new to the hobby and would love to know if you wouldnt mind. Looking at your tank now it was definately worth anything that you spent. Thanks

love the electric light lift

DUDE, that light lift is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

could you please give us the info on how you made it, or where you bought it from, i gotta have it........and please as much detail as possible

Firstly a big apologies for my delay. Plan to give a thorough update shortly as I have a few days off!

This is the best looking tank that I have ever seen. I do have a question for you though. How the heck do you keep your tank so clean???? Do you scrape it all day? I need to know!
Thank you. Lol... only twice a week. Very easy to do

imma follow this thread...I want (and will be soon) to make something similar to what you are doing here, but have ideas of great improvement [or not, depending on what you are trying to do / like] that excites me knowing the customizations I am considering may be very helpful to not only me, but anyone else if they so choose to use them. And if they don't, no worries. As long as after, or during the beta-testing/suggestions procedures and criticism throughout the process has refined my next logical course of action in building this project, it will be built....but better.
Sounds like somebody had a big night!! Thanks for the words

Absolutely love the tank build. So clean and nice. I'm considering whether i should do a shallow tank and this is probably a good example to follow :)
Cheers, good luck

The tank looks awesome!:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
Thanks

What's you dosing schedule now?
Will let you know shortly

V1,
Your tank is one of the most beautiful I've seen. I noticed you keep the coraline algae off your glass. I really like that look. How do you keep it off, with a razor blade or what? (complete noobie)
Thank you... cleaning regularly and I use a Kent Marine blade.

Can't speak for him, but the best way is to clean your glass regularly and never let the coralline get a foothold.
Thanks, Very true

V1,
Your tank is a ture inspiration to how amazing a reef can really be. I also see you use the zeovit system and it seems to be working nicely but doen't is get expensive to continue or no?
Thank you... it is managable. Carbon and the Zeolites (rocks) are what I need to buy the most of. All the liquids last a good couple of months

First of all, you tank is amazing / awesome!!! Congratulation.

I have a question regarding the Zeovit. Is the Zeovit used to run your system in a low nutriment state?

Since the new Bio-pellet is used to reduce Nitrate and phosphate, can the New Bio-pellet use to achieve the same result ?

Best Regards!

Chris
Hi Chris.. thanks. Yes is it a low nutrient system. I have not used bio pellet so can not comment. There are some that do.
Have a look at the zeovit forum. You may find some answers

I just can´t get tired of looking at this reef!
Thanks

Wow, i wonder whether the Zeovit helps out, cause i think youre doing a superjob anyway!

I wonder just how it all would look without the Zeo.. my hope is pretty much the same?

Or do you feel that Zeo does make a huge difference?
Thanks... I have had some ups and downs but generally I love this method. It does take a while to come to terms with all the different dosing options but is manageable.
Not sure if it makes a huge difference as I have nothing to compare with.

Wowsers! Your tank looks like a work of art, Andrew. The growth and coloration is so insane!
Thanks Tran... so far so good

Me thinks too... :)

I just can't stop watching at your tank! Beautiful design and corals!
Thank you

Simply Beautiful
Thank you Mozz

I will post a comprehensive update shortly.

v1,
JMO,
can i be wrong..but i see that one of yours scoly are recending, what do you think??LPS go well in UNLS?thanks
Yes, 2 of the 3 Scolys have gone through a rough patch. They have been in their current location for the past couple of months. They appeared to not get any worse so I just leave them. They are on the mend slowly. My other one nearly died back in Sept 2009 but is recovering nicely.

That seems to be what most think. I have no evidence but I feel that you do need to feed then individually to give them a chance. I have not directly fed them but will start to see if there is an improvement

Cheers... Not available in North America but there must something over there similar.

Your questions are all answered in the earlier post, start from page 1.
Thanks, appreciate it. Hopefully he found his answers

Stay tuned as there will be an update and filming has started for 'A Reef in the Sky 3'

hey andrew i very rarely target feed my scolly (like never really) but if they suffer some bleaching or other damage i target feed krill using a skewer 1-2 times a week for several weeks and they recover remarkably quickly. you'd be suprised how quickly they recover when target fed compared to not.

Cheers Ryan, will certainly start that. I purchased Reef Roids last year so I will use that. The Acans certainly like it.

Day 329 Update

Once again, apologies for the delay in updates...

Water parameters

No3 5 (Salifert)
No3 4 (LaMotte)
Alk 105ppm (Hanna KH tester) Thanks Shaggss!!
Ca 420 (Salifert)
Mg 1260 (Salifert)
Po4 0.02 (Hanna Photometer)
pH 8.0-8.3 (GHL probe)
SG 1.024 (Hanna)
Temp 26.5°C (GHL probe)

Dosing Schedule

Sunday: Food7 3 drops, Bak 5 drops
Monday: Sponge Power 3 Drops
Tuesday: Coral Vitalizer 3 Drops
Wednesday: Food7 3drops, Bak 5 drops
Thursday: Sponge Power 3 Drops
Friday: Coral Vitalizer 3 Drops
Saturday: Sponge Power 3 Drops

Daily: Mix zeolites, 0.25ml (x2day)

Water changes are every 7-10days (when I have time)

After every water change I dose 5ml of Coral Snow (within 1 hour of the water change)

One day after a water change I dose 5 drops of Biomate

Two days after a water change I dose 1/2 spoon of Zeozym mixed with 0.5L tank water. Stir it together and let it stand for 10-20mins before pouring into the sump and display tank.

When I dose Zeobak on (Sundays and Wednesday) I turn the skimmer off for around 20mins.

After a Zeolite change (the rocks) I dose 5 drops of Zeobak daily for 9 days.

Ca: 30ml per day
KH:30ml per day
Mg: Do not dose

The alkalinity has been low for the past few months. 30ml per day seems to keep it stable so I am in the process of manually dosing an extra 10mls per day directly into the tank to raise the KH. A few months ago I had the the automatic doser programed to dose 40mls per day which cause problems.

Lighting

On 6:45am and Off 7:45pm
100% intensity for 5 hours
The ATI fans in the lighting unit run 15mins before the lights turn on and 15mins after they turn off.

Recently swapped some bulbs around, now they are

Front to Back:
ATI Blue +
ATI Aquablue Special
KZ Fiji
ATI Blue +
ATI Aquablue Special
ATI Blue+
KZ Coral Light
ATI Blue +

Maintenance

I use filter socks from time to time but do not leave in the sump for more than 2 days. I wash mine in tap water, air dry and re-use a couple of times.

Keeping the sump clean is very important in my view. I siphon debris out during each water change therefore avoiding large build ups.

Clean the glass twice a week. Magnet front and sides. Use the Kent Marine blade and handles for the rear and near the gravel.

Hope that answers your questions guys... :)

30ml per day seems extremely low for you size tank, are you still dosing E.S.V. B-Ionic 2-Part? Are you dosing all at once or multiple times a day and if so how many times? I switched to E.S.V. B-Ionic 2-Part after having problems with my cal reactor and I'm using 100ml a day.

I've spent several evenings reading your thread and learned a great deal from your posts. Thanks for taking the time to document the progress. Did you ever consider MB7/Vodka dozing vs Zeo? What were the reasons you chose Zeo? I am in the build stage of a new SPS tank and am trying to decide which route to take.

.25ml of start2 daily?
Hi Dominic, it is 0.25ml x2 per day. 0.5ml total per day.

Hi Akrite... 30ml appears to be keeping it stable at that level. I just need to increase it to the desired level. Remember I'm using the Zeovit method that target the ALK between 6.5-7.5. I also use Reefer Best Salt which has great parameters.

Yes, I am still using E.S.V B-Ionic 2-part. I dose multiple times per day.

Where are the pics man? We're way overdue for an update!
Hey Clint... how's it going bro! I saw that Amercian Idol this year held auditions in your home town. Did you try out?! :spin1:

Here is one picture I took during the filming process... see below though :celeb1:

Hi there and thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. To answer your question, no I never did because it was still rather new at the time and only Sonny seemed to be doing it. Anyhow, from what I read, he is now slowly transferring over to Zeovit so that says something.

I chose Zeo because there appeared to be a lot of successful tanks, there were instructions and guides to follow (even though I read them many times) and there was a support forum dedicated to their product.

Wow!!!!!!!! Speechless man, first time I have skipped through this thread!
Cheers...
