A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Next time tell them to "get out the same way they got in" :) Apparently, the term "put'r in reverse" just doesn't work when driving a big ole' tanker :)

I live 3 miles inland from the Redondo Beach Pier. Long Beach is 20 minutes away, I have always wondered if I could harvest some pacific ocean water and test it's parms, tds, etc..

Nope....that's the last water you would end up putting in your tank. Especially off long beach.:fun2:I have seen the process first hand that catalina goes thru to " clean the water". It is absolutely amazing.

Kudos to danfeig for going thru the hassle. It is great water and I am sure your fish corals love and appreciate it. Tank is looking great. Dig the new coral.

Glad to hear you got that fish room nice and cool, I love reading your thread once a week to catch up on everything. That slice of ocean is looking amazing. Can't wait for some more fish room pics!

Thanks mpsti05!

It's actually still too cool! I had to raise the room temperature to 71 degrees and after a day of heat, the temperature is finally up to 76 degrees.

I will raise it to 72 degrees when I go to sleep tonight!

I am real impressed with their water quality. They do filter the water and treat it with both UV and Ozone. They buffer the PH and it comes in with zero Nitrates, Phosphates and Nitrites.

Taking it to the next level Dan!Well done!

Thanks guys!

Man I'm hating everything about you, first it's tank envy, now driveway envy? Why not just go for the killing blow and say you live on over 1000 acres of land :P

Oh jeez... I hate to disappoint you, but, I only have 5 acres of deeded land. Does it help though if I tell you our house backs up to the Coronado National Forest? It is a wildlife preserve/national forest run by the National Forest Service that includes an area of about 1.78 million acres spread throughout mountain ranges in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico.

We get lots of fun visitors that show up on our back yard wall or drinking out of our fountain. How about this pretty kitty?

Wow! What a great image. That must be quite the view you have out your backdoor.

For those who complain here about what others have, I think we should all just take a step back for a moment and appreciate that people like Dan, Peter and Chingchai have been so gracious as to welcome us into their homes to view their incredible aquariums. Just to know that such visions have been made real is something that we should all be grateful for having the opportunity to witness. I believe such homes and such systems make all our dreams that much bigger.

I totally agree with Dave. I would die to be mentored by either one of these great aquarist. I am sure there are more out there we didn't mention but I also feel the same way toward them. Props to all of them.

Couldn't put it in words in a better way!

Just a FYI, I wasn't complaining in a serious manner. In the same vein as people who look at previously mentioned tanks and have a webgasm over them, my comment about the driveway was more more stubble way of doing the same thing, have you ever seen someone comment about how great a driveway is? :D.

That said, I am no longer jealous, because I would seriously be freaked the hell out if a fricking mountain lion decided to sit in my back yard. I'll take the strays cats wandering around my neighborhood ANY DAY over that :D

Yes, I know, and I apologize if I sounded too preachy, but it kind of sets a bad tone in these threads. I look at people such as Dan like a host, and feel they are worthy of a modicum of respect at least.

No worries. Cheers!

Thats a beautiful cat Dan, I have yet to see a Mountain Lion in the wild but I have seen a few bobcats in the last couple years. The last one was walking right down Silverbell, you wont see any house cats wondering around in my neiborhood :) The desert looks beautiful behind your house.

Wow what a beast! They have one at the desert museum and I remember looking at it and thinking that I never want to see one in the wild.

A guy near here once had a small zoo behind his house, including a cougar that had been bred and raised in captivity - totally tamed. One day while he was cleaning the cougar's cage, the cat was resting on its perch and nonchalantly reached out and took a playful swipe at his leg - tore the Achilles tendon clean off. The power of these cats is tremendous. They do not belong in zoos and they certainly shouldn't be treated like house pets like that fool of a (former) zoo keeper did.
