A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Last night I introduced 10 Blue/Green Chromis and two Melanurus Wrasses into the tank.

My LFS was looking for a mated pair of six-lines but was having a difficult time finding them. They did find a few that had been kept together for a while, but the were tiny. The Melanurus pair are beautiful and each are just shy of 3 inches.

Excellent choice on the Melanarus wrasses!! I have a pair as well and they have done extremely well in my system. They really are beautiful fish, great eaters and I haven't had any aggression towards new arrivals like I had seen with a sixline I had many years ago. I did almost lose one when it jumped out of the tank a few weeks after I got them. Fortunately my cat found it right away and started making all sorts of noise but was too shy to get very close to the fish on the carpet. The noise got my attention so I was able to get it back into the tank with no problems. I installed a screen cover a short time later and haven't had any problems since.

Great work, I love watching this build progress!
I personally wouldn't use mag pumps because they seem to put off too much heat for my liking, I would get Ehiem to power your UV and reactors.

Thanks for following along and for the compliments.

I do have one Eheim pump running and will consider them for my UV and Reactors. Heat is definitely a concern. I did have a new Mini-Split A/C unit installed in the fish room before I left to help with temperatures and humidity.

im not sure if this was answered yet, but do you plan on adding more rock to your scape or keeping it clean and simple like it is now?

I do plan on adding some rock work between the towers to cover the lock-line. I was hoping to do this before we left on vacation but just couldn't find the time. I wii need to either apoxy some live rock together or will purchase some more dry Pukani rock that I can chisel out holes for the lock-line.

Your closed loop plumbing looks great, simple, and gets the job done. Love your big sump as well!!!

Thank you. I really can't take the credit. My LFS, Simply Elegant Aquatics, along with their plumber Rich, did an excellent job designing and fabricating the plumbing. They made it easy to add/remove pumps and left me plenty of room to work and clean the sump when needed.

Tagging along all the way from Europe here :)
So you're now off to holidays? When can we expect new updates?

Hi acabgd. Thank you for following along!

I hope to be able to continue to give updates. Not sure how much in the way of pics. My fish guys are at the house weekly and are sending me updates. We are still waiting on light hanging kits from Ecotech. My large fluidized sand reactor is being constructed. I am waiting for my GFO Reactor to be shipped. Waiting on LED strips for the sump along with a few other pumps.

The big thing I am working on is my fish list!

I am hoping that throughout my travels overthe next few weeks I will be able to visit several LFS's. We are in israefor two weeks and will then be traveling to Spain for two weeks.

Dan, Are you going to get a chance to go diving in the Red Sea. I dove near Eilat at a place called Enteebe. It was the Eqyptian Border. But the coral and sealife were amazing. Orange Imperator Angels, Magnificent schools of Anthias, table acros for miles that are too big to fit in your house let alone in your tank.
If you find a good dive company, tell them you want to see the clams. Red Sea Maxima's are amazing. they have been outlawed here for almost 20 years. And they were the best I have ever seen.
Take your camera. If they take you to the right places you will be overwhelmed.

I have been told what were once amazing reefs near Eilat have died off from the pollution from all the increased ocean trade routes.

Maybe find a guy with a couple of hundred nice tiny purple tangs who wants to ship to the uS. I'll handle the pick up and storage on this end :)

Thanks Aimforever!

I will definitely have to install some sort of screen on the three sides. I was thinking I would cut some black egg crate four inches high or so and place on the top of the tank frame.

Close call with the cat!

Both Wrasse's immediately went into hiding. I received an email from my fish guy on Friday that one was swimming around and the second was still hiding. Hopefully it survived the acclimation process! Beautiful fish though!!

Traveling with family - X amount of dollars,

"Traveling to see other LFS's outside the U.S. - Priceless.
:bow::bow::bow: "

+1 incredible experience!

Not this trip Dave!

We are here in Tel Aviv for a total of five days and then will be spending the balance of our time up North.

I have had the fun and pleasure of snorkeling around Entebbe. It's been several years, but, it was truly amazing!

I was even more so fortunate to snorkel and dive in Sharm El Shek, further South, before Israel gave it back to Egypt. I may be showing my age, that was in 1981 between my junior and senior years of high school.

It was that trip that my desires changed from freshwater to saltwater.

where are you going in spain? i will rent out my parents homes for radions lolol

We have rented an apartment in Barcelona for one week and then a second apartment in Madrid for one week.

My daughter will be living with a family (spanish immersion) for ten days that lives near Malaga.

Dan,

I know the feeling. When I dove Enteebe, it was the weekend Israel gave the Hotel back to Egypt. We checked out at 12 and the border moved over the hotel, at 5pm.

The hotel staff were giving away everything before they had to give up the hotel.

That was at the end of the 80's... LOL

Have a great vacation !
