A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Oh mah gooooodnessss! Those are rockwork. Ill be happy with just one of those, or maybe even a scaled down version. They look aztecish!!

Thank you sh8g8delik! They were a lot of fun to make.

I am anxious to see them under the Radions. I am hoping the lighting kits come in this week.

I love it... Sorry going to try a small version on my new build - you have inspired me with those works of art. Seeing your fish swim between those pillars will be priceless.

I am definitely looking forward to it. It will be a while for the fish though.... we are spending a month in Europe and I will let things continue to fully cure while I am away.

If you need any help with your pillars, let me know!

Hey, you could have pee'd while you were in there and got a jump start on your cycle...
Looking really nice, those columns are way cool!

Bugs it almost happened. The water was so darn cold. I had instant goose bumps, shrivels and my first comment was, "I gotta go p...!"

Congratulations on that amazing build!!!!

We need an open reef party now

Thank you kmu!

I feel like we have only just begun! Hopefully we will be getting the fish room closer to operational this week. Once everything is up and running, we will have an Open House.

Thanks for visiting!

Very AWESOME build, tagging along, can't wait to see it with a water in it. and see all the "behind the scenes" action in the fish room!

rock towers are awesome!!! subscribed

Welcome rcpaul!

The rock towers were fun to build! I am now working with th live rock on building some smaller structures that will hide/mask the lock line.

Thank you for following along!

The Sand is In!

The Sand is In!

So Joe from Simply Elegant Aquatics came over today and delivered 10 cases of Carib-Sea Live Aragonite Reef Sand that arrived earlier in the day.

That is 400 lbs. of sand that I had the pleasure of pouring into the tank this evening.

Hopefully tomorrow the water will be clear enough to take some good pictures of the tank with the sand.

I am also expecting four of the tanks and stands to arrive tomorrow for the fish room.

Cuttles. Thank you for tagging along.

Believe it or not, water has been in the system since last Saturday! I will try to post some pics of the fish room in the next few days. I am supposed to have four tanks delivered for the fish room tonight!

Holy cow this looks amazing! Thanks for taking the time to document your progress!

I was just curious, how are the pillars stabilized & do they seem pretty stable? They are so tall & heavy I would be worried about them tipping if they got knocked during maintenance or something.

Also, did you ever figure something out for the filter sock holder being too high? I have definitely had mine overflow in the past even though they were several inches above the waterline. In my mind that is something you want to make sure gets addressed to avoid any future problems.

Keep up the fabulous work!!

I always get a kick from the picture of you in the tank, I could never imagine owning a fish tank large enough to fit myself in. Anyway, the tank is progressing nicely and I'm look forward to seeing the other tanks installed in the fish room! Cheers!

Thank you very much Aimforever! I am glad that you like my building thread!

I am not the slightest bit worried about the pillars tipping over. When I cemented them together, I picked some very heavy bases and cut the bottoms so that they were level. We had some very, very strong winds when the concrete was drying. The winds didn't even budge them. Only one tower needed a little shim to help assure its balance.

With regards to the filter sock holder. They will definitely be below the sump to avoid any accidental overflows. I have Michael and the plumbers coming out this weekend and hopefully we will get them installed.

Thank you for your comments!

Fish Room

Fish Room

So three of the tanks and a new stand were delivered for my fish room today; one 90 gallon and two 75 gallon tanks.

The 90 gallon tank (on the bottom) will be filled with the live Tukani rock that has been curing in horse troughs in my back yard. The three tanks will be plumbed, filled and connected to the main system on Monday.

A ball valve will allow me to separate the top two 75 gallon tanks, so they can be run off canister filters and used as hospital or quarantine tanks. They will have a separate auto top off for when they are separated from the main system.

A 46 gallon bow-front tank, together with a new stand will be delivered on Monday. This tank will be used as a refugium and will be located to the right of the display tank in the fish room. I plan on it being filled not just with chaeto, but, caulerpa, halimeda, gracilleria and other marine plants.
