A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

From Live Aquaria I ordered a few things.

200 Mysid Shrimp to throw into my refugium and rock tanks. My Seahorses were going absolutely nuts.

Another 6 ounces of Brine Shrimp and a couple orders of Gracilaria Algae to feed my tangs.

I love all my fish....but I'm not showing them this pic. I'll have mutiny on my hands.

do you do anything to acclimate acros to your leds? i have had difficulty with acros paling under led.

Hi CHSUB!

If I am going to be putting the corals high up in my system, I will place the corals in my frag tank for a few days first. The Radions in my frag tank are set at 30% less power and are on for 4 hours less each day.

If I have a lot of corals to acclimate, sometimes I will place them low in the aquarium for a week or so.

Hello, wondering where you managed to snag the idols from? Im looking into trying them out myself, and i cannot find them anywhere! Good luck with them and great looking system!

thanks joe.

WOW- Dan, I love that harry acro! That thing is crazy cool! Your Apex stuff is awesome too! Well and so are your new fish additions! Oh freak your whole set up rules! :lolspin:

Dave, you are too funny! You are a hard act to follow!

I need to hire you to build me a new custom acclimation box for my main display that I can hang from my center braces. Are there any storms headed your way, where you will be locked up at home for a few days? I figure between pulling toys out of your sump and making snow men, perhaps you will have the time. :)

I've seen a lot of interest lately on achilles in this forum and I'm one of them. I'll be very interested to see how the two work out.

Joe

I will be sure to keep you posted Joe. Yesterday one was a little more aggressive than the other so I placed a sheet of egg crate in the middle of the tank separating the two of them.

It's funny watching their behaviors now. The one that was being chased is now being the more aggressive - swimming quickly up to the egg crate whenever the other one comes close by.

I am just continuing to feed them a ton in an effort to fatten them up. I will remove the egg crate tomorrow or Wednesday if a turbo snail doesn't knock it over or move it first.

My hope will be to introduce them to the main display in another week or so. I will make two large egg crate boxes that I can hang in the display for a period of time in an effort to make the transition easier.

Good luck, I've got my fingers crossed but I get the feeling with all the tangs you have dealt with you'll get these 2 to get along with each other.

I don't know what planet I was on but until Crazy Beaver said a pair of idols I thought there was only 1. You'll have to also keep us posted on that pair.

Joe

LOL!

Mutiny would be a terrible thing. I could see them ordering you to pick up fresh shrimp from your LFS weekly!

I have yet to pour any live shrimp into my main display. I have thought about pouring a couple of tablespoons into my return overflow. It would be a good treat I suppose, there is just not much in the way of nutritional value.

For now, they are strictly going into my QT's and seahorse tank.

Accidental Over-Flowing!!!

Accidental Over-Flowing!!!

This past weekend marked the forth time that I left the water running from my 200 gallon storage tank into my sump. I was just vacuuming the bottom of my QT's (removing maybe 40 gallons of water), before jumping into the shower and heading out for a show.

One problem. I jumped in the shower without shutting the water off. So before we left for the evening, I went into the fishroom to feed my seahorses and heard the famous gurgling noise coming out of my sump - maybe 1/4" from the top and overflowing.

No more!!!

Yesterday I installed new float switches in my sump and connected them to my Apex. This evening, I got around to installing a PVC solenoid valve on my water storage tank. My system is now set up so that if I accidentally leave my storage tank running, a float switch will be triggered that will shut off the solenoid valve on the storage tank and my storage tank pump. It will also trigger an email and text message to me, letting me know what occurred. If by chance my float switch fails, I installed the Apex Advanced Leak Detection Modules in three areas of my fish room; by the sump, QT's and my 150 gallon rock tank. If any of the Leak Detection Modules are activated, my storage tank pump, solenoid valve, skimmer pump, 150 gallon rock tank pump and refugium pump will be shut off and I will be notified via email and text messages. Additionally, an alarm will be sounded in the house to alert me of the potential flood.

Dan. Noticed youre running UV on the QT ...

FYI, as its a very seldom known phenomenon, amongst even the experts of/in this hobby, if you are ever planning to dose/medicate the QT with 'Cupramine', synthetic copper ... Ensure, by all means, that the UV Sterilizer is shut off, and fully remains off, during the entire duration of treatment !

The synthetic, chemical composition of Cupramine, when exposed to an Ultraviolet light source, is significantly metamorphosed/altered ... Through the vicissitudes/mutation of this reaction the product becomes exceedingly/acutely lethal to fishes

Nanoohio!

Thanks for stopping by. The Idols came from Live Aquaria. I have one in my main display that I have had for several months now. It's mate, only lived for a couple of months in my main display before she stopped eating. The one I have in my main display is a great eater!

I have two in my QT that have been there now for 3 weeks that I purchased together with my Achilles. Both are doing well. One is a little better of an eater. They will remain in my QT for 2 more weeks as I try to fatten them up and get them eating everything.

From there, they will go into my 150 gallon rock/frag/fuge tank, where aside from a few Leopard Wrasses buried in the sand, they will be the loan inhabitants for a few weeks. This tank is connected to my main system and the fish won't have to compete with others for food. I plan on adding a few rocks covered with sponges for them to munch on.

I am in no hurry. Once they are ready, they will go into the main display.

The pairs of Idols and Achiles will be looking amazing!Hopefully it will all work out!

Thanks Loukas!

They are all doing well thus far. I am really babying the Achilles.

I am waiting for an update on your build. The balcony stands look good and see you got the additional supports and braces in your tank. When will you be starting the plumbing?

Thanks Joe. All is good. I gave an update on the Idols a few posts back. Knock on wood, I will be introducing the Achilles to the main display in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for posting the pic of the pair of Achilles Dan, they are beautifu!!!

Thanks. I will try to shoot a few more pics tonight or tomorrow. I still have them separated by egg crate, however, I will be removing it tomorrow sometime.

The longest that I recall our electricity going out for was maybe 7 hours and that was ten or eleven years ago. I am not real worried about any major outages, but, I suppose that is what accidents are. We don't have hurricanes, earthquakes or major floods here in Tucson. We do have a monsoon season in July and August. We get some strong winds, lots or rain and some lightening storms.

I do have too much invested in the system not to take the extra precaution. I am definitely looking into a backup generator.

hey, just got done looking at your thread and i thought it was awesome how you documented every little detail of you aquarium and life (especially on vacation). Beautiful aquarium. I am from NJ and when sandy Hit i lost power in my house for 7 days and no where to get gas, generator, electric. Before that i can't remember losing power EVER for more than 10 minutes. Many reefers lost there there entire systems, we all take power for granted until it's gone.

The amount of money, time, energy, and life stock you have invested in your tank you should def plan for a major outage b/c unfortunately when it happens it will be the last on your list, Solar power is key for your fish and family. Keep up the great work

I ended up having to separate my 2 achilles with egg crate(split my tank in half) for a good ~4 weeks. The first time I had them separated for maybe a week. Took the egg crate out, they were about ready to kill each other and had quit eating for a couple of days. I really thought one was about to die turning pale white and just laying suspended in the water. Separated them for 4 weeks after that to get them eating well again and get use to seeing each other more. Released the 2nd time and the aggression was much much more subdued.

Now after almost a year, they hardly even bother each other. Wish I had a nice reef tank for them to swim in, oh well...

G'luck with the fish! They look like they're about to have a new very nice home.
