A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Snakes!!!

Snakes!!!

I thought I would share this with everyone that doesn't live in the Desert.

My daughter just came home from a friends house and called me to come out to the driveway. There were two rattle snakes, fighting or mating in the middle of the driveway, wrapped around one another! It was insane! Pitch black outside, the attached photo was taken with the headlights of my daughters car shining and my iPhone. I didn't want to get too close! I HATE SNAKES!!!

That would rattle my bones!.. Lucky im living in Sweden where the most dangerous animal is wasps.. Except for the polarbears roaming the streets.

I HATE SNAKES!!! -- I'll second that

I think I'll stay here in Huntsville, Al. I only have humidity and heat to worry about, oh and did I say humidity with just a tad bit of moisture in the air (and running down the side of homes lately and windows covered in water every morning). There will be free samples of the humidity at MACNA.

Here in Brazil I would say it was my mother-in-law and her friend came to visit my wife.

Sinister and dangerous vipers have "dating" on the sidewalk.
Cheers!

I read this whole thread through starting yesterday and I am now finally caught up... but now I'm sad I'll have to follow along in real time! Your tank is inspiring and amazing. I LOVE how deep it is... exactly what I want in a few years when my wife and I buy a house!

Thanks for sharing your journey with us... I wish you great luck for the future!

infpalex,

Thank you very much for the nice words. I am in the planning stages of a couple new things with the system. Now that my QT's are empty, I am back to figuring out what I am going to do with one of my 75 gallon tanks. I am also considering doing a little more aquascaping in the main display so that I can add a few more corals.

I look forward to following along with your build one day.

New aquascaping......

Hmmmm I have some great ideas.... We're going to need some fiberglass grating, a circular saw, some crazy glue, some slab rock, a hammer and a cooler of cold beer with a back up blender, and a bottle of Captain Morgan for when we finish.

Fiberglass grating? How do you use it?

It's egg crate made out of fiberglas. 1"x1"x1" squares and a 3'x10' sheet of it would support the weight of a full size truck.

You cut it to build a skeleton structure to support the rock.

It's inert, doesn't float, is super strong, and with the rock on top of it you only have one layer of rock and it's easy to get flow through it.

I have a "built" thread in the big tank forum and there are photos of how i used it for my personal tank.

Dave now I remember seen it in your build thread but didn't remember its name! It's a great way to save rock and add flow, swim space! Is there any "special" kind or type?

It's a commercial product used for elevated walkways. It has a non-slip surface, it's non conductive, and it's impervious to caustic materials. Other than producing a nasty dust while cutting it, it's really good to work with. I have done several fish tanks for myself and others and you can build a pretty good structure to place rock upon. Then it's just a question of assembling your rock to hide the structure underneath. I have both a dark green and charcoal grey colored material in my tank.

Tis the season! In the last week I have seen 5 snakes in my driveway or around the neighborhood. Same thing with eels. I think I will continue to stay away from both!
