A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Dan one really nice set up. I like how your support systems are so robust, IMHO the real reason one DT thrives and others just get by or worse is the planning and effort for all the back room/under the stand lay out that most people never see. Your reef is surely thriving!
I do feel a little bad for you, what with all the requests, yet you are to blame, for you have truly spoiled us. For months my Fridays were made or ruined by your FedEx Friday posts LOL.Thanks for all your updates. Mike

Yeah what he said.

I know you have a lot of catching up to do from your vacation, but you cant keep your fans waiting.

Fts! Fts! Fts!

Did I miss the current FTS?

I agree! We need some fish room video too!

Come on... Give a kid a break! We just got back to town!!!

My vacation days are over except for MACNA, a quick trip to California, another one to Mirival and maybe a few other long weekends. The kids start school again on Thursday.

Griffin is in Wyoming and Sam is in Chicago. I will try to have Justin or one of my other good photo friends come out this week and shoot a pic or two. I also need to contact this photographer from Tucson Lifestyle that recently took a FTS.

I will get some updated pics shortly. Promise!

The sohals are in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The sohals are in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since March 23rd, I have had the joy of acclimating my two Sohal Tangs together in one of my 75 gallon QT's. I can say that it has truly been a labor of love and that they have been my biggest challenge thus far.

I can't tell you how many times I needed to, or chose to, separate the Sohal's ("Time-Out" if you will) with some egg-crate in the center of the tank. One would start to get too aggressive. For the last month though, they have been perfect together. Even sleeping together in the same piece of PVC.

So, after 4+ months, tonight I decided to introduce them into my main display. I am not quite sure why tonight of all nights and I decided to dispense with my normal protocol of putting them into the tank when the lights were out and into separate egg-crate boxes. I just scooped them up with a net and put them in right after one another.

The introduction went different than I expected. For whatever reason, I expected the Sohals to be the immediate "King of the Jungle" but that hasn't been the case at all. For an hour or so, they each were chased by some surprising fish. I was expecting my large Lopezi Tangs to go after them. Instead, it has been a much smaller Yellow Eye Kole Tang, a smaller Clown Tang and a Powder Blue that have been trying to flex their muscles.

The Sohals have pretty much been staying side to side together. One of them might get chased, but 10 seconds later it is with its friend or mate (too early to tell the sex). After a couple hours, the chasing seems to have diminished a ton.

Sorry for the crappy iPhone pictures. I need to get a good camera and until then, I need to have someone come out and shoot some good pics.

Nothing special, a couple more iPhone pics of the tank as the lights have started to dim...

That Elegance looks like it is doing really well. Can't tell from the pics but it looks like it's solid bright green now ?

Are the Borbonious in the tank? Did they all make it through QT ?

Dave

Congrats Dan! I'm glad to see the sohals well in your display and wow those front tank shots are great! That is the mother of all elegance corals lol. Best wishes and continue the great work you do with your aquarium!

I believe FEDEX Friday has turned into Sohal Friday. Its nice to see you have succeeded in getting both Sohals all the way to the display tank and I'll be the first to admit it ..... They are my favorite tang, I'm jealous :-)

Congrats
Joe

Woohoo! Congrats on finally getting the sohals in the DT! Your tank is looking amazing as always and it looks as if you are getting great growth rates as well.

lolz. You've been apologizing for iPhone pics for almost too long Dan. I think its time to get a camera so you can take some nice pics of your tank. You wont regret it!

Dave,

The Elegance is amazing. Bright green with pink tips.

All of the Borbo's are doing great! Yes, they made it through the QT just fine. One of them is in my overflow and I need to remove the Magi-Mufflers and pull out the PVC so it flows into my filter socks. Perhaps this week.

How was the big Frag Swap that you held???
