A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Ridiculous tank Dan! And it looks even better in person. Now my tank looks so small and boring. Damn you!! At least I don't have snakey sex tainting my driveway but I did find a desert tortoise in my garage on Sunday. Scared me because I wasn't expecting him but he crapped himself so I guess I win.

New aquascaping......

Hmmmm I have some great ideas.... We're going to need some fiberglass grating, a circular saw, some crazy glue, some slab rock, a hammer and a cooler of cold beer with a back up blender, and a bottle of Captain Morgan for when we finish.

Dave B

I am a good with everything but the Captain Morgan. We are in Tequila Territory!

Thanks Brian!

I was glad that you could make it over. Getting those two wrasses out of my seahorse tank were a challenge. I still can't seem to trap the other three!

Since you mentioned snakey sex and your desert tortoise, how's this one (only in the Desert)???

Tequila makes your clothes fall off

Next post we have the turtles

I'm not going to touch it, nope not going but I'm sure Wayne will have a good comment, I'll just wait.

I'm just a little worried that after a weekend of Tequilla sampling and tank aquascaping we could end up with a fresh water planted tank filled with feeder goldfish :)

Seahorses

Seahorses

So one of my male Seahorses has been acting like the tortoise from one of my previous posts. All over it's mate! Here are a couple iPhone pics:

Check out it's "brood pouch!" I think that's what it is called...

You are about to be a seahorse daddy. Hope you can afford the child support.

It's the daycare and diaper bills that kill you...

LOL. We'll see guys!

I don't know enough about my Seahorses. They are so cool to watch! The males color is back to brown. The other night when it was all over the female, his stomach/chest was white!

I was able to remove one of the wrasses in my Seahorse tank. I still need to remove two Bangai Cardinals that I have in the tank too!

Now its definitely time to turn that seahorse tank into a display tank. Between the snakes, turtles and seahorses I'm thinking you have something in your water over there. Maybe I could buy some for my girlfriend :)

LOL... if the water will do the trick, you can soak her in my fountain. :lmao:

Macna

Macna

I look forward to meeting everyone I can at Macna.

If I am not in the exhibition hall or listening to all the presentations, you will find me at one of the bars in the Westin.

I hope to meet as many of you as possible! Send me a PM and let me know where you'll be!

Good luck and be safe. And make sure you drink one for me.

Macna 2013

Macna 2013

I think everyone had a great time at Macna! While the speakers and presentations were good, the best part was meeting so many hobbyists and fellow reefers.

It was great meeting Dustin, Ed & Sandy, seeing David and countless others. It was very humbling to have people come up to me and ask "Are you the Reef Tank in the Desert guy?" When I just logged on the computer, I realized that I had received many PM's from RC members letting me know that they were at Macna and would love to meet up. I apologize for not getting back to you. I never had time to go online. It seems like time completely flew by and there was not a lot of time between the seminars, meeting with all the vendors and beer! Next Year in Denver!!!

Two reefers were noticeably absent: Wayne and Dave B. :(

Attached are some pics from the event to give those of you an idea of what things looked like:

Thrive Aquatics was one of the big sponsors.

I am real excited about this one... An aquarium water testing machine that checks all of your parameters. It's a cross between a RedBox and an ATM. You pour in your water, select the test... it tells you what your levels are and gives you a prescription for how much Ca, Alk, etc. to dose. It both prints and emails your results.

It is similar to a manual API test, however, the color is computed by beam of light through the sample and it is precise. No more having to ask my wife "does this look more yellowish or orange?" Also, no more mixing or counting drops!

Looks super sweet, I just wish MACNA was during a time of the year that 1) I could take off more than a long weekend (I'm sorry if I have to pay money to fly anywhere I'm making a vacation out of it, as a teacher I'm limited to when that occurs) 2) My wife wasn't working so hard on the family farm/farmers markets this time of the year.

Who knows maybe sometime in the future it'll get drivable distance... then I only have to worry about telling the wife "I'll see you in 3 days" :D
