A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

In my experience, I have had luck with the Kent Tech M as what you stated Dan is what I also read that the product has some metal in it or something that kills off the bryopsis. What I also did was siphon out and pull out the bryopsis manually so none of the spores would release into my tank, they would just get siphoned out. Not sure this would work in your case, since your tank is Gigantic and I'm sure the bryopsis isn't easy to get to lol
 
Living here in Mesa and thrilled to see a fellow Arizonan with such an impressive tank. LFS have been going crazy here. I think 5 have opened up in the past 8 months here. Hope you're getting some good LFS down there as well. Tank looks amazing.
 
Well where do I start, for the last 2 weeks I have read this and was worried this thread would end with the tank being taken down, glad it's still going and kudos to you on such an amazing build.

I had bryopsis and took a chance with a lawnmower blenny, jeweled rock skipper and he loves the stuff.

Hope to follow this tank for many years

Erwin, it's been a long time. I hope that all is well with you!

The Bryopsis is all gone thanks to dosing 12 gallons over a few week period. I haven't dosed in ten days and am now concentrating on getting my Mag back down and getting all the metals out of my system. My mag is somewhere around 1,550 ppm.

I set up an FX-6 with carbon and have been running it on my system for the last 8 days. I have changed out my GFO and will change out my carbon reactors this weekend. I have my Genesis water changing system changing out approximately 36 gallons a day right now.

What is amazing to me is how much the intense Mag dosing messed with my salinity, Calcium and Alkalinity. Everyday, I would get significant changes in my levels.

Hey Dan, I see you have been busy lol. Well that's great news to hear and glad you got rid of that nasty bryopsis. its crazy about the magnesium huh? I had the same issue, my levels were a little off when raising my magnesium as well. I now upgraded tanks and I'm at a 75 right now. I am now battling some phosphates and I need to add some gfo, I haven't setup my reactor just yet but I'm sure once I fire it up my phosphate will go down. I mean its at .11 according to my hanna checker, not too bad lol. Now I have to test levels every couple of days to get back check how much my new system consumes lol. its never ending lol

Thank you for the nice words. The bryopsis is all gone and things are really looking good! The lawnmower blenny's really did a good job too. I will have to check out the Jeweled Rock Skipper's, I am not familiar with them.

they are the same fish, we catch them locally here in the rock pools, awesome fish
 
Dan, I've been lurking for the last week or so, reading and enjoying the photos and videos of your phenomenal tank. Thanks for sharing your build.

Things have been going really good with my tank. Since I took care of the Bryopsis issue, I have had a lot of good growth!

I have been on the lookout for unusual/colorful Goniopora species. It's my wifes favorite coral and they seem to flourish in my tank.

I am in serious need of doing some fragging. I also have a few corals in my grow-out tank that I have yet to find the time to place.

I just now read the whole thread. All I can say is that I am amazed and inspired by your posts! Thanks for sharing and for being an anchor for reefing in Tucson.

Dan,

Tank looks great -- Some serious colonies growing out in there. It's amazing how the first couple of photos you barely see any of your fish.

You need to program a White Photography mode into your Radions so you can get more white light for the photos.

Shoot us some photos of what's going on in the back room..... Please !!!!
