A Reefaholic's 1000+ Gallon Mixed Reef System Build

Did you hand your family have a good christmas

Great christmas with family minus the wife as she worked 12s on Christmas Eve/Christmas. Guess being a nurse working at the largest level 1 trama unit in the midwest has its positives/negatives! Celebrating the other half of Christmas tomorrow. Holidays have been killing progress but good to spend some time with the family and newborn niece from November:

If I could get the wife to stop spending money on her we'd have more money for my reef project;)

I'm on board dustin!!!! man you are thorough. I was losing sleep about my tank fitting down the stairs and kept on thinking that I missed something. But once i saw them carry the stand down into my basement I knew I was ok. My only fear is the movers will drop the tank when they flip it to bring it down the stairs.

Nice to have you Steve. I think I'll be using the pump I got off you for my water changing station! Let's hope it works since you never used it and I have not tested it yet...:spin2:

I forgot you bought the pump from me. it should be fine....I hope

Definitely get the tank done before kids. with kids its not so much as having time to work on the tank as it is having the money. my kids are 6 and 3 and I let them "help" me with wc's. I have an old hydrometer that I let them use to test the salt level.

Steve

Made some further progress on the sump tonight and below are the pics!

Here you can see that the baffles are in place and only thing remaining inside is probe/float switch holders which I'm still trying to figure out..

Top glued on. Made a small mistake with router so that should prevent any vacuum from being created since it is now a box!

Next I'll have to route the top out to make the bracing and areas for the filter socks to go in. Might have to actually head to PA for bulkheads/filter socks before I cut out the holes though.

looks fantastic! following along..

Thanks for following along and happy new year to all! :celeb1:

I'll get the sump routed today but still throwing around ideas with the filter socks.

I've honestly never used filter socks in a setup and realize that they need to be changed frequently to prevent nitrate problems and fine with dealing with that. I originally was going to just bring out the bracing on the top and put holes in for filter sock but no longer like that idea! If anyone has any ideas let me know as I'm going to start a thread in DIY section getting some advice:)

happy new year.
Did you ever pick a tank builder?

Not yet. I've still got some time before I build out the DT as I'd like to get the system maturing for a while and frags growing out beforehand. Also need to save up some more money to pay for the lighting as I don't have that in the budget yet!

Wow some solid work there!

What do you have planned out for lighting?

For lighting I've decided I'm definitely going LED. I'll likely pick up a couple Radions for my frag tank once I have water in the system and test them out for a bit before I decide what I'll do on the DT. If I like the results I get with the Radions on the frag tank then I'll use 8 Radions on the DT.

I have some time before I start putting the DT in place so a new LED fixture may hit this year too that outperforms the Radion?!?

Why Radions? Im looking at getting LEDs for my 120 as well and really cant make heads or tails of all the LED's out there.

I'd say the Radions because of the spread, easy upgrade to clusters in future, and most of all the endless control you have of the fixtures. Like I said, I'll be running them as a trial on my frag tank so I'll have a better idea of my opinion once I test it out:)

Ooohhh Radions!!

If only they weren't so darned expensive..... but they do offer a lot of functionality.

Been running LED's for a couple years now, and I love them! I'd post pics but my tank isn't quite great, more due to my lack of reefkeeping skills than the LED's themselves.

Bello, your tank looks great and I've seen it over in the Reef Discussions forums. Drop tank is a cool idea and was a first for me:)

Thanks Dustin, but its only when I get colors like the echinata in your avatar, will I be truly happy :)

When you getting the Radions? I'm sure you'll love them! Maybe when I upgrade in a couple years......
