A Reefaholic's 1000+ Gallon Mixed Reef System Build

What GFO and Carbon reactors will you use?

I'll be running dual Carbon BRS reactors and depending on how the LaCl does, I might not be using GFO. I have about 20 lbs of High Capacity GFO on standby should I have to start using it but would have to buy some new reactors. I ended up switching to BRS style reactors because the ease of maintenance. Also will be tying the reactors into my RO/DI reservoir so I can easily flip a couple of valves when changing media to rinse media and make for easier maintenance. The harder you make maintenance, the more likely you'll skip over it!

A bit too sticky...

A bit too sticky...

As summer approached and started heating up noticed our humidity in basement was hitting around 50-55% with the water in the DT so something had to be changed. A couple weeks back added an exhaust for the fish room with a dehumidistat and fan, as well as exhausted the skimmer straight outside with a 3/4" pipe as it was a humidifier when fired on!

The fan has 3 speeds, I've been running it on one speed and think once I've got the cabinetry mounted, I'll be able to keep the humidity contained to the fish room and keep it at a good number where I can keep evaporation and humidity at a good number.

6" Fan:

Controller I ordered off hydroponic website:

Mounted fan on bottom side of floor and ran exhaust to a 6" dryer vent outside with baffle on it. Need to pick up some rubber to dampen some vibration to the floor.

Mounted dehumidistat.

I love having one. Humidity is under control now and ambient temperature of basement stays around 70-75.

Well that is definitely a bonus in my book. I will have to see once the tank is running If I have to go that far. Right now with my present tank im fighting pH issues really bad. Thinking about trying pickling lime to help out and if that doesnt work maybe a CO2 scrubber.

I'd try the CO2 scrubber/media before the kalk. It's just so hard on equipment and whatever maintenance you do on your current equipment, double that! I was worried I'd have PH issues after bringing calcium reactor online but I'm staying between 8.2-8.4.

Looking good Dustin.

Congratulations on getting her running! I also used some exhaust fans to get rid of humidity.

FYI on the GFO reactors. Precision Marine has some good ones, I am using 2 of the large ones on my system & they are easy maintenance.

Dustin,

How do you like that humidistat? I got one a long time ago and never could figure out wiring and then gave up. This looks like you just plug and play?

THanks AJ. Need to pop over to your thread sometime when I have some spare time...Just have not had that much spare time lately.

@Roni, I like it and it was very simple. Just really plug and play like you say.

First round of fish will be added to tank tomorrow. I've got 50 black axil damsels, lawnmower blenny, bicolor blenny, midas blenny, pair of buckshot clowns, pair of black ocellaris clowns, and pair of naked clowns. Only about half of those will arrive this week and remaining will arrive next week.

Hey Dustin I too use the BRS reactors. I like them but am thinking of switching to a few GEO ones. Top notch build and ease of use being separate reactors and all

We could have swapped about a month ago then! I just sold a couple of them because I wanted reactors that are a bit easier to take apart and replace media. With carbon I'll be replacing every week on one cartridge and figure that I'd rather let the system rinse the media and simple change out a media cartridge rather than unhooking the reactors, taking off lid, making a mess of water, and taking out media. George is definitely a great guy and top notch customer service.

Dustin so your going to use the 10' refillable cartridge for carbon with the brs reactor? correct?

I've got a dual reactor of the 10 inch refillable cartridge and will be using Carbon in those. Likely will change out each side every two weeks but alternate so I'm replacing once a week. Should I end up adding GFO later, I'll just add a jumbo reactor from them.

That's the best idea i have heard!! Changing the carbón from a regular reactor is a pain in the a$$ mostly retrieving the carbon from the reactor!

Thanks D for all the hard work writting the thread!
Really appreciate!

Thanks! I try to make the thread as educational as possible and always open to questions. Hopefully I can have my website up in about a month or so with a more concise overview of the system.

The aquarium is looking great! I love your tanks size in general and I think the aqua scape fits it perfectly. Just out of curiosity I think I read that you switched who you will be getting fish from and I was wondering if it was someone local?

Been a while since I checked out your build and WOW. Everything looks awesome, I can never get over how much attention to detail you have as you've build this monster.

Congrats on the kid also.

Yeah that is a good idea man!!
I think George has some new ones that might be easier to change, not sure. I'm headed over to see him 2morro and drool on some stuff :D
