A Reefaholic's 1000+ Gallon Mixed Reef System Build

wow, thanks for sharing the recent photos, I love the Ponape Birdsnest and the ORA Birdsnest.

How big was the ORA when you got it?

Thanks! I've only had them about 6-8 months. Local reefer was tearing down his tank to downsize a bit before moving and many of the colony sized pieces came from him. Honestly have thought about chopping both the birdsnest colonies in half so they are'nt so oversized in comparison to the other corals. Either are mounted so I can do some heaving trimming when I want some real estate in the future. I'd say they've both grown about 2-3 inches in diameter since I've had them. I've had much better growth/color since switching to the Atlantiks. Really looking forward to seeing the growth over the next 1-3 months to see how I'm doing. (Before I was not taking growth shots like I should have been to track progress. Now I have more time since I've just been doing small tank projects here and there.)

The way the corals are looking I take it that you are really lovin the Atlantiks.

Yessir! I had to dial them back to 80% on light intensity and they are with the wide angle lenses and 16" above the water. Very happy with them thus far and my focus now is getting the water dirtier. I've only got ten fish in tank so far and Chromis will be coming this week.

how many did you start off with and how long did it take for them to dwindle away like that? I figure in the first few weeks I'll lose a few (5-10 out of 50 with them deciding pecking order) and then will likely have to replenish about 5-10 a year to keep the population up to 40.

It was a small group, perhaps 7. That was just prior to our seam-bust in 2010. IIRC, we only lost one that night, and they all made it over to the temporary 350. I think based on our experiences, your estimate is about right, although we really can't say with any authority about a school that large.

Just curious, want to poll the audience. What does everyone use for a good feed for their calcium reactor. Currently using a 1/4" tube on the inlet side of Eheim 1260.

1/4" tubing from a manifold hanging off of our main return pump. Plenty of flow - and we've got ours running just about full tilt. :)

Gotcha, that's what I need to do soon. I don't like the consistency of the suction side of pump. Bill Wann recommended same thing on tapping off manifold. I've got a place I could easily do that so might get the fittings I need and tap it off my manifold that goes over to frag tank.

Also, sorry everyone for the broken image links. Just paid up on PhotoBucket until I can get everything migrated over to SmugMug.

It made it in 4 business days so really quick turnaround.

Mine made it in about 2 weeks.

Pic of the two tanks I had delivered. Gave it a bath and powerwashed but still have some streaks from the freight company handling. Can I use bleach diluted solution to clean the outsides?

I will have to use the vinegar on mine too... They have some freight marks.

Thanks for the idea and the link.

I personally think we are putting those barrels to work in the wrong way. I believe if we started brewing beer we would be much happier with our tanks.

Just went through the your whole thread man. Great tank and setup I'm glad I got to see the build from start to corals in the tank over the few days I was reading and learned some great things to try with my tank build.

Thanks for the idea and the link.

Glad you got them. It's definitely a requirement for my system as I would have constantly been making water!

Glad you took the time to read it! I'm working on a website that will show a better wholistic picture of the system so you don't have to read 80 pages on RC:)

I've been ramping up the livestock in the tank, mainly just fish/inverts but I'll have to try to snap some photos this afternoon or tomorrow.

In past month or so have added:

FISH
- 2 X Helfrichi Firefish (1 MIA)
- 1 X Midas Blenny
- 1 X Starry Blenny
- 1 X BiColor Blenny
- 2 X Buckshot Clowns
- 2 X Naked Clowns
- 2 X Black and White Ocellaris Clowns
- 50 X Green Chromis (Believe in about 4 days I'm down to 40-45. Hoping they stop fighting soon!)

Inverts/CUC
- 100 X Trochus Snails
- 5 X Emerald Crabs
- 2 X Sand Sifting Starfish
- 2 X Brittle Starfish
- 3 X Sexy Shrimp
- 3 X Cleaner Shrimp
- 1 X Fire Shrimp

I think that's it right now. Currently designing stand/system for a bigger QT. Next round of fish will hopefully be in next 1-2 weeks after I get the QT system going. It will be made up of 125, 75, sump. If I can fit 1/2 40 Breeders in I might try to do that too:)
