a snail of a different color

Hi all,

I just recently purchased a lot of nassarius vibex diver direct from the carribean. I noticed one of the snails has a solid jet black body. The shell looks identical the the other snails. Is this just a color variation or a different species of snail? Should I relocate it to the sump?

TIA!

It kind of depends on just how "identical" it is to the other specimens. If it's absolutely identical, then it may be just a melanistic Nassarius. If it's only -similar- to the others, it could be an Ilyanassa (which probably didn't come from the Caribbean, but ended up in the same tank) or a small buccinid whelk, which are cousins to the Nassarius. Your call, unless you want to post pics here for comments.

Cheers,

Don
