A Splash of Color - My SPS Peninsula Reef

Before i show you the feeding/flow video i just want to point out that i may have moved a few things around yet again Sahin but in my defense i had to make adjustments for the new acros. ........... i also frag bombed the top of the arch rock with left over frags....... so don't go off at me ok. :p

I introduced the food very slowly so as not to frighten the fishies.......... :)

Biggles please stop posting these outrageously stunning videos of your reef. You're making the rest of us look like a bunch of noobs...

The SPS forum was tranquil place...a place to post our average SPS corals...now rainbow colours are flying out of your thread its just not fair mate; you've upset the flow of things around here.... I mean its not even worth posting photoshopped pics of our SPS...as your stuff looks better than our photoshopped stuff. :headwallblue:

Now for just this one time for me, can you set your camera steady and record a video of your SPS corals for at least 5 minutes so I can watch the video every night and dream that your tank is actually mine. :hmm2:

Nice photoshop tutorial on the pictures buddy! Good tips :-)

The tank is looking pretty sweet. The video for your flow was a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing it!

Your stuff is looking top-notch as usual. Right now I'm settling for seeing some visible growth on one piece, really for the first time on any SPS! The color doesn't look healthy to me, but it's nice to see some SPS trying to grow. So I think I'm very slowly moving down the right path still... very... s.l.o.w.l.y....

p.s. - Check out my thread, I've been sneaky! ;-)
p.p.s - WHERE IS BELLO!? :deadhorse:

Great vid! You definitely got some good flow going on in there. Will you be adding more to your new setup?

I hear you Big's, I have added a few LPS just to add some "movement" to the tank that can be seen from a distance of a few feet. I still have stick sickness but can appreciate a nice acan or euphyllia, etc.

Great video biggles, thanks. :D

No probs mate, here's a small night vid showing the typical positive reaction to my twice weekly turkey baste of the sump to blow all the detritus and who know's what that lives on the sponges etc covering the sump walls into the return pump. This is all i ever do in regards to detritus etc, never vac it out just keep disturbing it regularly because everything from corals to critters goes nuts for an hour when i do it and it only takes 30 seconds of my time. The display is filthy for a good 15 mins but clear again an hour later. I see no change to the skimmer, no shutdown and no increase in output the following 24 hours. When i stir up the back wall sand which is filthy can i tell you, there's a lot less sediment visible but the water turns more cloudy/milky and the skimmer shuts down for a good 30 mins with a surge in output for the next day or so.
The vid is relevant because it alerted me to one of the RW-8's needing cleaning. The flow is constant one way if you watch and i never allow this anywhere and know that means the RW-8 which interrupts this one way flow intermittently has lost a good deal of punch and is no longer strong enough do it's job - the best time to check flow is at night with a torch or make your own vid and watch it. More feeding polyps out makes it easier to see flow reactions and crap in the water stands out better by torch light.

Wow beautiful tank!

Thanks very much mate :)

As always you're way too generous with your remarks about my reef Sahin, i take it you noticed the super smooth camera work.

Hey Troubster, Bello is ok mate and will be back when he's ready. Sometimes life and family needs and deserves our full attention ;)
I will come and see what you've been up to in your journal buddy :)

Great vid! You definitely got some good flow going on in there. Will you be adding more to your new setup?

Thanks mate, i'm actuaaly thinking one of those new gyre pumps across the top and a couple of decent output streams such as Tunze might cover the whole job. The circulation in a peninsula is the biggest challenge, everything else is same as usual pretty much. I want sand so that automatically makes the flow at the tip a challenge lol. I'll start off BB and add more and more sand over time. The display sand will probably be used to seed the new sump DSB if i manage the changeover methodically. I need to tell you guys exactly what i want to do and how with the whole upgrade because i have no intention of cleaning anything as everything in the current system has a good use imo. I will even scrape the sponges etc off the old sump walls and throw them in the new sump prior to taking it offline.

Totally agree mate, speaking of acans check out all the babies that have sprouted on my funky colored acan. You don't see most of them during daylight because the parent polyps shroud them when open.

I like how the yellow sponge decided to grow right between blue and red mushrooms - i won't tell you what i didn't do to make this happen as it's a secret.

Well you must be doing something well as everything looks great, keep on doin' what your doin'. I gotta say some of my favorite things in my tank are the varied and assorted hitchhiker sponges and fan worms, they are just odd and cool.

Hey mate, haven't stopped by in a while but wow the tank is looking great!!!. And may I say......when did you get those bloody beautiful Acans? Loved the pic tutorial as well, you really brought the colors out!! Thoroughly enjoyed the videos as well. Great Job mate:thumbsup:

I'm very interested to see what you think about the gyre pump in an SPS tank. I've been considering one as well, but i'm worried the flow is too one directional. I might use it with a couple mp40s, but i'm not sure yet. I love how much water it moves though

If i has a DSLR with a macro lens i'd be able to capture some awesome micro life pics, fan/xmas worms are one of my favorite things :)

Hey Rory, thanks mate. I've had those acans for ages, one was hidden in the sump simply because Sahin and Bello are both disgustingly sneaky about their new coral and fish additions so i feel compelled to do the same. Sahin is bad but Bello takes the cake. That guy could post a FTS of his 100gal cube with a white pointer hidden in the bloody display..........:spin2:

Biggles your tank looks great!

The Gyre pump is really awesome! I've been able to remove an MP40 and 10 from my tank.

Thanks Chris, i'm glad you're impressed with the gyre pump mate and thanks for the positive feedback on how you find it mate
I was thinking i could have it blowing across the top of the 5ft peninsula with a couple of strong speed controllable Tunze type directional pumps i can mount below and out wide on the same back wall to interfere with gyre one way flow. That's the general idea at this stage, do you think the model you have would suit ?

Hey mate, as i said to Chris i plan to use one with additional pumps just as you're considering. I wouldn't use just the gyre on any SPS display personally after watching the videos showing it's flow. Terrific idea and the unit appears to work great but like just about every major piece of equipment we use it works better or best with additional tweaking :)

I propped the phone on some poly boxes and made a vid while i sat out the back having a coffee. It was 90 secs long so i sped it up a bit to 30 secs.... speed reefing :p

I was planning the same pump setup with my new tank too, will be interesting to see how we go. When is your new one going to be wet biggles?

Hey Rodney, i'm not surprised that you're thinking along the same lines mate. As soon as i saw the way it worked and the massive wide flow i thought that might just be the perfect pump for real peninsula displays with all three viewing sides totally clear of pumps.
I think it should work at least as well as using all stream type pumps so i don't think we can loose tbh. I need it to be as quiet as a Tunze pump though so that might be a problem, noise level is a deal breaker in my small place.
I'll order it just after xmas and should have it wet late Jan, early Feb. I'll fill it below the overflow to begin with and plumb it in to the existing sump at my lazy leisure. I have 4 x 39W T5 and 6 x 24W T5 tubes i can run over one end until i have money for a second Radium setup and the current lighting will cover the other end when i transfer everything over.

Hi there buddy

Mate that tank of yours is looking super sexy and I can't believe how fast your fish swim!!!!! :lolspin:

But seriously great work mate, it brought a smile to my dial watching that video and seeing how well everything is going :D

Biggles, whilst your corals look great...I dont think the same about your fishes...they do some sort of jerky swimming...is that a normal occurrence in Australia? :p

Also...DID ANYONE NOTICE KEVIN crept into the shot??? I thought you booted Kevin out Biggles  I see he's made his way into your house again. You are a softy Biggles. :lolspin:

Otherwise all looking brilliant mate.

Biggles, you have a great xmas and a happy new year mate. :celeb1: DOnt get too drunk. :p

I do think the 50 watt model will do well for you. I only have mine at 50% across my 4 ft 120 gallon.

Sahin, OMG I missed Kevin the first time. I watched it a second time, and sure enough there he was on th lower left. What a sneak! I bet he will be doing laps in the new Peninsula tank. Thanks for pointing it out.

Marty

Marty, Kevin and Biggles are VERY sneaky...
I thought you had learnt that they are a part of a particular sect of Reefkeepers called the Sneaky Ones... You always have to be fully alert mate.

Homework for you: study the ways of Sneaky Ones...I'm told Biggles is the leader...and that Bello is one of his students...

This particular movement started in the Reef Discussion...notice how Biggles is now in the SPS forum...very sneaky move I tell you.
