A Splash of Color - My SPS Peninsula Reef

The scolly soli plan came to an abrupt end when i realised the scolly which was already removed from a spot on the rocks due to light stress, wouldn't handle the light level where i wanted to attach the soli. I ended up plonking a lump of bright orange pav in the middle of the bright green soli. Haven't taken any pics of it in the tank but here it is on the bench after i'd shaped the end to match the rock curve i was attaching it too. Beside it is my 2" high acro stand which the soli rested on while the putty/glue was curing.

Not very pretty out of the water, it's about the size of a small hand, like a girls hand size, not a man hand size........ it's Mindy hand sized. :)

Then since i was in the mood i grabbed a piece of rock out of the sump and stuck the stupid monti on one end. The monti looks light grey in the tank - nothing like the color out of the water. I hate the monti and the monti hates me.

Then since i was putting this little island right where one of Wrangy's frags was resting i borrowed it and attached the rock it was on to the top of the other rock. This way the acro encrusts over real estate that can go with it to its new home rather than chopping it off the main rock when Wrangy takes it home. It's bright blue tipped and sprouts heaps of new tips and thickety fine growth very fast.

Finally, since i realised after closer inspection that the acro i thought was a loisetteae is in fact a straight growing piece of bloody horrida i decided to shove it on the little island too. The horrida was in pretty bad shape with lots of dead bits from laying on the store tank bottom for quite a while. I chopped the dead top 2" off the main branch and left the rest to heal over. It looks coloreless light grey with white polyps much like the stupid grey monti.
It's the island of lost SPS dreams............ grey monti....... grey horrida....... pretty blue acro that's not mine.........

Man Andrew you will get them colored upno problem. And i can make them brown in no time lol.

Your recent acro additions have been absolutely amazing!

Thanks Matt, everything since Xmas has come from Deer Park aquarium which is a small LFS run by the nicest guy to deal with - Dave. I think because i'm a horrible person we mesh..... Acro Yin Yang.
On a serious note, Dave gets in the most amazing acros regularly. He keeps them in a nitrate factory with a trickle filter included in the sump so they lose color fast but i have a good eye after years of buying wild stuff for what a poopy acro will look like under good conditions.
Now that i know he plays hide and bloody seek with acros in the flubber tank i'll check the LR bin as well next time - just in case

You sure do get some amazing colors biggles! The new additions are really nice, that blue one is a gem.

Thanks very much mate :)

Hey Dan, i know you're a better reefer than that mate ;)

It's Sunday night here and i have the day off tomorrow so the pics from this point on will be slightly more porny in post processing........

Guess which SSC i hate..........

I went to Deer Park at lunch time on Wednesday and Dave showed me your wrasse....... i asked Dave to sell it to me and he offered to get me another one in and i was like ' you're missing the bloody point Dave, i want Wrangy's wrasse not another one that looks like it - you can tell him your mom sold it while you were out doing stuff and then you can get him another one in and i won't ever mention i have the wrasse - easy ' ( i was lying of course because i would have posted pics all over RC of that stunning little fish :) )
Poor Dave didn't know whether i was joking or not lol. Don't think he's all mr nice guy because he did offer to move your fish a few tanks away so you freaked out when you came to pick it up........ i like Dave :)
hahaha Dave did mention that he was going to do that to me and that you'd mentioned it :lolspin: I would have come straight for you if she had been gone, although you weren't the only one to try, a couple others said they tried the old "I'm here to pick it up for Dom" haha didn't work, Dave was pretty vigilant!

I'd already scoped out the acro sale tank - nothing new that i liked and then tried to steal Wrangy's wrasse to no avail when Dave starts banging on about how he's expecting a new acro shipment in a few days...........
I was facing away from the acro tank looking past Dave at the 10ft long flubber sale tank opposite ( i started feeling nauseous btw ) when i see the most unusual looking acro i've ever seen laying on the bottom surrounded by garbage. I pointed at it and said ' what the hell is that Dave '

' Oh yeah i thought i'd put a few pieces in there to see how they go, that ones really interesting looking. There's a couple of other nice bits up high on the shelf but you have to bend down to see them '.

Dave, Dave, Dave.........

I bent down and saw the other two pieces i came home with that day.

In future Dave would you mind not HIDING BEAUTIFUL ACROS IN THE FLUBBER TANK ! :deadhorse:

This is what happens when two pacifist acros meet.......... nothing.

The polyps are in constant contact but both these tree hugging acros refuse to throw a punch. The baby blue tipped one has instead decided to grow under the other acro.

That's so cool that you've got them happily living side-by-side, I really need to come and pick those amazing reefing brains of yours! And Dave does love hiding the occasional gem in the flubber tank, I know there's been a few nice ones in there of late! lol

The pink one its to girly lol

Lol here's a man pic - the sump. I removed the carbon ages ago but i have 100gm of phos zorb in a mesh bag being blown on by a 6025. To the right is a 5lb lump of rock and the skimmer. Once a week i turkey baste the sump top to bottom after dark when the acros are hungry. Detritus etc is recycled back to the display.

hahaha you did too, I didn't recognise them. The blue is doing really well but the green is pretty brown :( I just need to move it up, needs far more light than it's getting!

I might try the sump turkey baste trick tonight, I like that idea :) I might make a visit in the next couple of weeks if it's alright, finished uni for the semester so I have a little time on my hands lol

Both SSC Acro bushes looking great. :D I agree with Dan though...one of them looks too girly. However the sump photo has balanced the manliness of the thread. So we let you off Andrew. :p

Sounds like a plan mate :)

:oExcuse me: what's a flubber tank?:reading:

Flubber is all the colorful stuff that waves in the current etc and is easy to keep that we SPS keepers drop here and there to add some bright color down very low. LPS and ssss......sssss......softies......brrrrrrrr - makes me shudder just writing that word..... these are flubber. Colors you don't normally see in acros can be added via these corals to add nice contrast to the display.

Girly....... that's rich coming from the guy with the bright pink and white red planet :p

Some night pics before i go to bed.

Ouch my eyes hurt! :lol2: Bright Green Alert! Bloomin heck Andrew. That Green Aussie is crazy bright! But it looks lovely.

Biggles,
How big is that bright green acro in the post above? I have never seen anything like that at any of the LFS around here, its stunning!

Between all the amazing baby blue and flaming pink acros you have, Andrew, it's gonna take a LOT of manly sump shots to prove you don't wear girls' underwear to bed!!!
If you do wear girls underwear to bed, I don't want to know about it. You are free to wear what you like in your own home!!
I, on the other hand, am in touch with my feminine side and am comfortable saying that I covet (deeply) all of your creamy baby blue and pink corals!! They are, to borrow a word from your girly reef self..... Scrumpdelyicious!!!

Lol i specifically took that pic just for you because i know how much you like all my green stuff... it's the same underneath btw.

Hi mate, it's about 10 x 5". Fluoro tipped tabling acro pieces are quite common, for me they one of my touchiest acros - if something is out of whack with the water they let you know real quick.
Fluoro pieces like this one are not common however and i scored this when i got my cool blue acro. It was about 4" long from memory and cost me $70- which is double the going rate for most fluoro tipped stuff. I saw it about an hour after it was unpacked so it was only out of the ocean for maybe 3-4 days and i could see that it was almost completely fluoro even though paled from stress. It was glowing under the LFS Radions lol. I made sure everyone knew those two acros were mine within 30 seconds of entering the shop - he who hesitates is lost when super duper cool acros come in :smokin:

Thats because Mr SPS Colouruperiser hoards all the nice Aussie aros. :mad2: Only Biggles' rejects get shipped out. :mad2:

Mate if you saw some of the acros i ignore because i don't like thicker branching stuff you'd cry acro slime.........:p

Lol Matt, i snapped the third SSC just for you...........

Thanks Andrew

No probs my friend.

Since Sahin is doing photo tutorials i did a top down tut although mine uses way more high end equipment.

Go buy a plastic bug keeping thing for $4- or so and stick your phone in it. The syringe of boiling RO death was nearby so i chucked it in the photo so you could see what it looks like.

y_zpsvt2lc9yk.jpg~original

Stick the bug box in the water and snap away, i found the tangs hiding as usual when the bug box monster is prowling above. After a few minutes all your fish will come out and ignore you lol.

o_zpspgsutar8.jpg~original

Considering how easy it is i expect to see much more top down porn from everyone

Thanks Mark :)

Here's another example of tricky Dave hiding acros about a month ago as we stood in front of the acro tank.......

Dave - ' Nothing very nice unfortunately '

Me - ' That brown and cream thing has pretty growth but it's probably green '

Dave - ' No i'm pretty sure that was white with pink polyps when it came in, it cost me a lot i remember that '

Me - ' Really, well i'll give it a go then, bag it please mate '

What i was saying inside my head was OMG OMG OMG ITS GOING TO BE PINK AND WHITE !!!!!!

It's still coloring up but i think you'll spot it............ and yes Sahin you can scratch another pink girly acro off the UK importers list now....... ;)
